1388360 2014-11-20 00:38:00 How did the highly paid Executives do their budgeting in the first place?

But this is completely normal with Govt IT projects . Wait until you see the screwup and budget joke the IRD will end up as .

I mean I did some work for the council project (via IT place - via agency - just to make the pay methods even more bloated at the councils end) a while back . It was such an unbelievable joke I quit after a week . They were amazed - but we are paying you!!!

Yeah but I like to do actual work, not have endless tea breaks, lunch breaks, unofficial lunch breaks then official ones etc etc .

And the rest of them did their stuff one by one . . . . I did mine 6 at a time . Of couse I was finished by 2pm anyway . . . . . could I proceed with more? Hell no, have to wit util tomorrow . . . .

Meaning, we (rate payers) are paying them to have fun up there!

Funny part is, when you apply for a (Council) job - no matter how low the job is, they expect you to know this, to know that, 3 reference checks, etc . , etc . ; and, after you have got the job, you don't need to know anything! LOL

What a system!!!

1388362 2014-11-20 04:52:00 the other factor is govt only likes to pay 1/3 the price. so it "blows out" to what it would have cost private firms. tweak'e (69)

You reckon the Govt only likes to pay 1/3 ? I don't think so! I think they usually pay 3 times the normal market price!

i ran into one of the IT guys that works for one of the big co's, they where sick of tendering for those job's cause Govt always wanted it done at 1/3 the normal price.
i've had it myself when people want cheap cheap work done, it just ends up costing them more in the long run because the cheap job doesn't work and needs endless fixing. so yes it does end up costing 3x the normal market price!

1388367 2014-11-20 09:37:00 Actually, it's not just Govt depts and councils who have these sort of blowouts - it is across the whole board.

World-wide, something like 60% of projects have major problems.

Google "IT project failure rate"

1388368 2014-11-20 11:52:00 This often happens with most govt/council departments & IT upgrades. They just seem to have no idea , keep changing the specs & requirements as systems are being developed
and dont seem to be able to tell that a $800 PC should NOT cost $2000+ .
They then decide to get custom one-off software, rather than use whats proven & in use elsewhere .

Quite right.

I did some research on this subject a while ago when the Novapay debacle was in the news. As Decibel says, IT projects are a problem all around the world. Decibel says 60% although I thought it was more like 40% of projects.

Whatever. The point is that many new computing systems fail to provide what the buyer expects. Often - probably most of the time the buyers expectations are unrealistic - but the software developers never admit that.
