443020	2006-04-02 05:47:00	I attempted to burn a folder of documents to a CD using a Fujitsu Lifebook laptop. A window appeared requiring the CD (a Sony CD-R) to be formatted before burning could commence. This I did and had to give the CD a name. The burning then commenced and was successful. Later I placed the CD into the desktop computer (both computers use Windows XP) and the CD appeared as blank and having no recording on it. When played on the laptop the CD contains the material and opens correctly. The CD therefore does hold the documents. Why is this? Is there a setting in the laptop which will remove the need to format CD's inserted for burning material?	Mike Spong (10120)
443021	2006-04-02 06:13:00	If it required you to format the CD, then thats clear evidence that you are running a "packet writing" (drag and drop" program on the laptop such as InCD or DirectCD. These use the CD-RW in a non-standard manner and format. Unless you also have that software installed on the desktop CD, it cannot recognise the data. I prefer a normal burning technique, the XP native one is just fine for data. The first thing I do is remove packet writing software as its often a cause of conflict, plus the outcome is about as unreliable in terms of data readability in the future as anything I have come by. Its not uncommon to add a file and lose the entire disk contents. Avoid it if possible. CD-RW were designed to be written to in the normal manner, then fully erased and Re-Written. Thats what the RW means, its not designed as a Read-Write, even though with packet writing it will work (most times)	godfather (25)
