443063 2006-04-08 06:14:00 This is what i dont get ... i am in christchurch on telstras cable internet with 10mb connection downloading at 1.4 mb/s optimally ... is why do telecom make a big deal about their 'fastest' plans? Also when will telstra move their services to other parts of nz! Timmy19 (6248)
443064 2006-04-08 06:38:00 another thing about all those speedtests ... i hav tried alot of ones both from overseas and nz .... they hav goven totally different results ... overseas ones i gather are rather congested as i can get a reading of 2000-3000kbps from them wheres getting a reading of between 5000-7000kbps from a nz speedtest ... but i hav never got a full 10000kbps possibly due to the fact that the servers that are being used for the speedtests are not even rated at 10mbps in nz ... because telecom arent quite up to the play with their internet yet ??? Not sure!

(lol did that make any sense what so ever~!)

443065 2006-04-08 11:38:00 That site I suggested is in the USA (as the original poster said they are in the USA).
Xtra have a speed test as well and that will give you a better gage of your download speed.

Tonight
Speakeasy (San Francisco) -- measured 123

and ten mins later
jetstreamgames (Xtra) -- measured 244

big difference between the two measures !!

443066 2006-04-08 12:57:00 Telstra won't be moving their service to any other parts of NZ for a while. I take it due to Telecom mainly but the fact is, it would cost Telstra more than what it's worth to do this and were actually losing from it than gaining same with other companies and their ISDN, Wireless, etc. So until Telecom allow competition, there's no chance anything will improve quickly. Can't wait till we reach 5Gbps, I know they will then double our plans again and tell us it's faster, cheaper broadband... sigh.

Cheers,

KK

443067 2006-04-08 13:07:00 Dial-up: Stable and slow speed. No worries, no frustrations. :D Renmoo (66)
443068 2006-04-08 21:51:00 Same as ye pctek in Dunedin - only seeing 330 kilobytes/s - with some burst to around 400. On the ihug 3.5 plan.
Depressing isn't it. Especially after having had 2Mbps without any problems.
Oh well, I'll be resuming my nagging with Telecom on Monday.

443069 2006-04-08 23:16:00 At the risk of boring everyone as I have made a number of posts on speed. I am getting the following results on my check this morning. These show that we are now on 3.5Mgs (at least).

Reading copied from Jetstreamgames is (representative)

Your line speed is approximately 175179.6 Kbps or 21468.1 K bytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

One was as high as 257295 Kbps !

443070 2006-04-08 23:48:00 Hmm, can you try that again but hold down the ctrl key down at the same time?

Looks like the cache wasnt cleared on that result.

Im on wireless and thought id try that speakeasy site as well. Mine was 350 kBs d/l and 41 kBs u/l

on that same results page Misty, hold down the ctrl key and press the f5 key so you clear your cache at the same time you're doing the test. Everyone gets those results if you dont refresh correctly :-)

443071 2006-04-09 00:08:00 i tend to use this site for bandwidth tests .

. nzdsl . co . nz/index . php?module=Speedtest" target="_blank">www . nzdsl . co . nz

my result there is

your current bandwidth reading is:

2 . 66 Mbps

which means you can download at 340 . 16 KB/sec . from our servers . thats including a current download going at approximately 80 kB/sec .

I saw a mention of "contention ratio" . I believe this to be the reason for the varying results . Im on 1Mbit wireless and my friend is also now on 3 . 5Mbit dsl . i normally get 2Mbit and higher anyway . Yet my friend on dsl gets around 1 . 8Mbit speeds, and he also mentioned contention ratio . he said because of the dsl protocol and the number of users etc . . dsl users will rarely get the best from dsl . . where as wireless wireless users like myself are almost always (barring actual know faults on the network) able to get the maximum available .

Interesting seeing the difference in results for wireless and dsl . Dsl of course is more widely available than wireless .
