443055 2006-04-07 13:00:00 Just tested my internet speed - download and upload as suggested by CYaBro to someone else on thread 67676.
Result was:
1st test - download 34kps -- upload 57kps
2nd test - download 56kps -- upload 56kps
Misty

That site I suggested is in the USA (as the original poster said they are in the USA).
Xtra have a speed test as well and that will give you a better gage of your download speed.

Tests from Xtra speed test site:

Your line speed is approximately 1662.3 Kbps or 203.7 K bytes/sec
Your line speed is approximately 1686.5 Kbps or 206.7 K bytes/sec

443057 2006-04-08 00:25:00 So as someone who is about to go from dial up to a 3.5 plan how much of a speed difference can I expect. I know they say "up to 80 times faster" but what does this equate to? If it takes me 25 mins to get a 3.5meg mp3 now how long will it take with b/b? I know it depends on how many others are online and the quality of my connection, but all that aside what is the ballpark download time, will I be able to download a 100meg movie trailer in under a minute? or will it take 25?

Curious

Curious For a 3.5mb mp3 it should take 10 sec roughly depending on the upstream and for a 100mb trailer 5-10 mins if my calculations are correct :nerd:

That was using 400k/s for the calculations, you may or may not get that, depends on many things.

443059 2006-04-08 01:19:00 Hmm .. well the best I seem to be able to do (via 3.5M ICONZ ADSL .. upgraded last week) is between 480kbps and 1024k kbps (only once very briefly!). Usually hovers around 675-680kbps or thereabouts. Since the "upgrade" I've also had frequent time-outs, ftp download stalls, and just generally irritating internet experiences. And I've often been accessing at times of the day that ought to be light usuage periods (i.e 2am or so).

Unimpressed thus far. This aint what I was hoping for!

Have emailed ICONZ support to see if they can help - they're normally very good. But suspect that it's the infrastructure man - i.e contention ratios etc.

Does anyone know what acceptable FEC error rates are? Not sure if my error rates are indicative of a problem or not.

Cheers

Mark

443061 2006-04-08 03:36:00 Guttered, this new 3.5mb seems 'too good to be true'

There are no internet problems here....well that are not my PC's fault :( BUT then I am stil on the 2M :p

pctek you are having some really big speeds probs there and I would guess that maybe the line system ( can not cope with it, the exchange seems to, the router is connected at 4288 so... inshort I have no idea about your slowness :(

443062 2006-04-08 06:00:00 Same as ye pctek in Dunedin - only seeing 330 kilobytes/s - with some burst to around 400. On the ihug 3.5 plan. gibler (49)
