443409 2006-04-03 18:57:00 Paradise provides static IP at no extra charge.
I switched from Xtra 2 years ago because of that.

They don't. I was with Paradise for years and never got a static IP. It changed every time I shut the modem/router down and restarted. It may only appear to be static or you got lucky

They wanted more money when I asked them for one.

443411 2006-04-03 21:11:00 Apparently xtra will be providing free static IP from the 1st of April, you just need to call up (wait an hour) and request it or you can request via the xtra website, this info came from the xtra helpdesk. tbankz (10130)
443412 2006-04-03 23:20:00 Ummm they do? All I could find was this (www.xtra.co.nz), and it doesn't look free to me. Is this the same page you were talking about or did you see something else? Erayd (23)
443413 2006-04-03 23:42:00 I'll second Jesters thoughts.
We have been using a No-IP redirection service (free!) at work for about 2 years and never had a problem.
A few of my clients use it as well with no problems.

Have used it for remote desktop, vnc, remote email access, VPNs, ftp...

443414 2006-04-04 07:19:00 hello

as for the xtra plan:
"For Xtra Broadband Go plan at the end of April, you will be able to get a Static IP. A Static IP on the new Xtra Broadband Go plan will cost an extra $20 including GST per month."
Just to come back to the; No-IP redirection service, is it the same like having a static IP for things like P2P??

that sounds very interesting. So with using a no-ip redirection it is (virtualy)the same situation like having a fixed IP? My querry comes from the use of P2P, as that needs a fixed IP?
So would it work in my case? Have you got any experience in that?

Gion

If I use DC++ for P2P I generally just change my IP addy in the DC++ settings page to reflect my current IP at the time, rather than using the no-ip addy, however I can't see why it wouldn't work.

If you wanted to set up your PC as a hub for P2P then you can certainly use no-ip to redirect traffic to a particular port on your PC. When you log in to the no-ip website you select whether you want a port or url redirect.

When I use it for a gaming server for example (Flight Sim), it directs users to the correct port on the server PC that will give users an overview of who is on the server when they enter the no-ip addy in their browser, if the server is offline I change the redirect to display a web page that says it is offline. Teamspeak directs it's own port automatically, using the same no-ip address. I have used it to share files directly on an FTP basis from work to home and vice versa.

Nothing to lose in giving it a go!

Would you be able to tell me how to setup no-ip.com for p2p?
At the moment it seems to me to steep without more help.

Thanks

No-ip won't make a difference for p2p - it just provides people with an easy way to access whatever servers you are running on your computer. All p2p needs is to have your router set up to forward the appropriate ports to your computer.
