443188 2006-04-02 21:12:00 Friends system will not boot as <windows root>system32\hal.dll file missing or corrupt.
Asks to reinstall copy of file but how?
Have run hard drive through my unit looking for a place to copy to.My system via c drive has system32 folder with hal.dll file but when I link to faulty hard drive I can not find system 32 folder in Windows to copy file to.
Also at boot I insert Windows XP at start and select repair but where do I go from there? Do I go into root and when there what do I do.
Any help would be great.Would like to understand more.

443189 2006-04-02 21:39:00 because the source name of the file differes depending on whether you have a multiprocessor machine etc.

e.g. for multiprocessor: halmacpi.dll is the file that is renamed to hal.dll

443190 2006-04-03 02:19:00 I too have got this problem with hal.dll
Seems like it is a problem that's happening to lots of people right now. Is it a virus that's causing it?

In the link that gibler provided, it describes a way of replacing hal.dll by removing the HD and putting it in another machine.
Another way of doing that (which is not quite as drastic) is to simply boot up Linux from a CD and copy the good version of hal.dll from c:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\ into c:\Windows\system32\
Of course, you have to mount the device first.

Good luck with this.
It didn't work for me. :( :(
