| 443966 | 2006-04-05 03:57:00 | Hi I am trying to share Internet + files between 2 computers. The computer hosting the internet connection is WINXP Pro SP1. i log on to internet using a USB modem (DSL200). I have shared internet connection on this PC the lan connection IP addresss is 192.254.188.172 subnet mask 255.255.0.0. the other computer LAN is setup to obtain ip address automatically. i can get internet on this computer but cannot access the files shared. when i put \\192.254.188.172 into the run dialogue box it says "No Permission to access resources" The Windows firewall is disabled. I have no other firewall installed. |

Manually putting the ip addresses in, they'll keep the ip addresses that u put in. Also make sure the workgroups have the same name. Also create a folder and share it on each. DON'T share the whole hard drive on either. And I wouldnt get on the net with no firewall at all. You're asking for trouble. |

Did u create a folder on both and enable sharing on them? If both are using XP, put my network places on the desktop, if it isnt on the desktop now. You tick my network places on the desktop / properties / desktop / customise desktop. Then add a network place, after u double click on my network places. |

| 443972 | 2006-04-07 03:02:00 | Yer it is possible to share the net and files on 2 pc's with ethernet or wireless. I do it here. I dont use the USB modem tho. Its most probably the modem (If this is an adsl modem), screwing things up. If it lets u add ips etc to it, or it can be used as a firewall/router. Buy a modem that lets u use ethernet as well. Or buy a PCI adsl modem. |

You shouldn't be entering IP addresses in the "Run" window to access shared files . ;) Does the "other" computer appear in the "My Network Places" (Or Network Neighbourhood) of each computer? Does the W98 require you to log in when you start it . If it doesn't, enable the "Microsoft Network Client" option in its network configuration . You may need the Guest account enabled on the XP box . |

I did exactly what u asked but i can access the shared files of the other computer which is hosting internet but when i click on the "other pc" in network places it says no permission to access resources . and also the internet is not on . |

| 443975 | 2006-04-07 20:07:00 | Does the USB modem have an ethernet connection on it?? How are u connecting ethernet up between the 2?? Thru the modem? A hub? A Crossover cable?? If the modem doesn't have ethernet on it, you'll most probably need an ethernet hub or a crossover cable, between the 2 so they can talk to each other . |
