443878 2006-04-04 22:13:00 I had to repair an XP installation and now I can't reinstall XP SP2. I put in the CD, it starts up and I click install but then it sits there. Waited minutes but nothing. any clues? stevesumner (4849)
443879 2006-04-04 22:32:00 does SP2 still show in add/remove?
if so try uninstalling it first
also try sfc /scannow to check there are no corrupt system files
make sure it is clean of viruses, spyware etc and defragged

443880 2006-04-04 22:38:00 Don't know, I am at work at the moment. Strange thing is in System it tells me I have XP SP1 but I still have the security centre under control panel. I can't access IE either but I haven't tried reinstalling that yet, could this be the reason SP2 won't install? Does it need IE working properly first? I had IE 7 Beta and will try reinstalling that this evening. stevesumner (4849)
443881 2006-04-05 01:03:00 Use ccleaner, to get rid of the temp files etc.

And try installing SP2 in safe mode. See if it works.

I dont know why it won't install, but its a good idea to check for spyware / malware etc, before installing SP2. Or the system may reboot continuously.

Or have other probs.

443882 2006-04-06 06:08:00 Thanks for your help. I gave up in the end and reinstalled windows on my old drive. It's all good now, just have to finish installing everything, partitioning etc. Bonus is my old drive is much quieter than the new drive I had (Seagate 160gb rackety as hell!) and is quick too (although it's bound to be with a fresh install).

Used autostreamer to make an installation CD with XPSP2. Worked a treat!
