443825 2006-04-04 13:50:00 Hi
When i tried to install windows XP PRO onto a new hard disk (200GB) it only let me creat NTFS partition where as i wanted Fat32. and why did it show my hdd as 131 gb when its 200 gb, so i expected atleast 190 gb.

443826 2006-04-04 15:56:00 Sounds like the drive had been installed b4 and the files/partition(s) were set at NTFS .

You ALWAYS have the option of the file set type . NTFS is an option as is FAT32 .

I suspect that there is a hidden partition (from a packaged system or a recovery partition?) already installed on that drive . . . . it may have been returned to the place you bought it as defective or wrong purchase, re-boxed and re-sold .

If you wanna get rid of the junk and optimize the drive, format it again (good idea anyway even if a new drive is installed) using a Win98SE boot disc with CD-ROM support .

443827 2006-04-04 21:34:00 You were right . there was a 58 gb hidden partition which was only visible in partition Magic 8 .

Now as i said before, XP Pro only gave me an option of NTFS, so all partitions where in NTFS . Now i converted all off them to Fat32 except the system partition (where Xp is installed) . The question would i get any major problems by converting the system partition to fat32 .

443828 2006-04-04 22:02:00 You may have probs with FAT32, it wont see all of the hdd .

Thats why XP wanted it to be formatted in NTFS .

Why do you want it in FAT32 anyway?

If you're using the hdd for something like video files / MPegs etc . You wont be able to create files bigger than 4GB . Since this is a limitation of FAT32 .

443830 2006-04-05 02:11:00 NTFS is the default that XP wants the file system running...but you do have a choice....

I don't know why you would want to have FAT anything running as the file system for reasons that Speedy mentioned.....just a bad idea in my opinion.

443831 2006-04-05 02:34:00 Wel i thought that Fat32 is easier to get around with, because it is accessable from dos in case their is a system failure. gum digger (6100)
443832 2006-04-05 02:37:00 Now if i was to install Windows98 on my other partition which is Fat32 . Do i just run the setup? .

i have the feeling that Win98 will take over the boot manager .

443833 2006-04-05 02:43:00 I don't use dual boots . . this is outta my area or needs . . . but I know 98 needs FAT systems . . . whereas XP PREFERS NTFS .

The only weakness, and one that hasn't been noted by me, is that you cannot make a recovery disk in (I think . . . ) Spybot or whatever . . . . . . . I never worry about recovery things . . . I just burn down the root drive and start over .

I save a lot of vid files and mp3's and I don't think I'd be happy with the 4 gig limit . . .

443834 2006-04-05 03:09:00 Ru serious . so if i capture video from my dv camera i wont be able to capture more than 4 gb? .

Yup, I am .

And yup, you're right . You wont be able to capture files greater than 4 GB .

With FAT32 .
