| 443811 | 2006-04-04 13:16:00 | Hi, I would like to know if it's possible to get windows xp to run from a cd so that you can browse your important files and copy them if windows won't boot from the hard drive? If I can then my next question is do you actually get to see windows xp or is it like recovery console? (where you have to type commands in DOS) I have downloaded 'Utilmate Boot cd 34-basic' but what I want is to actually get to browse my hard drive by using a windows explorer type interface. (i.e. I want to be able to see windows) Any help would be great, Thanks |

You will be able to view your Windows hard drive contents using a GUI (graphical user interface). For example, Knoppix will give you icons on the desktop for your hard drive partitions. Clicking on them will allow you to view folders and files in a File Manager window (like Windows Explorer). You will be able to copy files from your hard drive to a removable storage device eg USB flash pen, or transfer data across a network to another computer using SAMBA. If your partition file format is FAT32, then you will also be able to write files to that partition eg, copy files from one partition to another partition/hard drive. If all your partitions are NTFS then they will be read-only under Linux. This article may be of interest to you as well: Fixing Windows with Knoppix (www.extremetech.com) |
