443708 2006-04-04 04:14:00 have downloaded the bios update that i need. are these safe and how do you flash the bios?
also, does anybody have any info on what all the different settings in the bios actually mean and do?
The problem is with the ports (see my earlier post), but I am beginning to think that the bios is the culprit. will updating it/flashing it help? or am i just making matters worse? :badpc:

443709 2006-04-04 04:21:00 Are you sure you have the right BIOS update?

Its not the Phoenix part you look for, its the motherboard brand and model you look for, to get a BIOS update. As if u flash with the wrong update, you'll end up with a dead system.

I wouldn't play around with the BIOS options, if u have no idea on what you're doing.

Do you know what the brand / model of the motherboard is??

If you do, I would go to the site, and download the manual for the motherboard, before you do anything else. It will tell you how to go about flashing the BIOS.

443710 2006-04-04 04:29:00 ran everest - it's an Intel Seattle II SE440BX-2.
will try what you suggest.
the bios file is the upgrade to the version I have and it's a later date.

443711 2006-04-04 04:41:00 Did you get the BIOS update here? (downloadfinder.intel.com)

I think this is your mobo.

The only changes to the latest updates, by the looks of it are:

Production 17.0
· Banner changed to Production 17.0
· Correct ACPI reporting of ComB when set to IRDA mode
· Added processor updates

According to the Intel site.

Also according to the Intel site, have a read of this (developer.intel.com) before you update the BIOS.

443713 2006-04-04 05:55:00 okay guys - I just finished wandering all over the intel site reading every bit of info they have on my mobo. I got the bios update, but I don't know if it will resolve the problem.
and no, none of the info seems to be of any help.
I still think the problem may be in the bios though.

short (ha, ha!) description: first, the floppy drive died. tried brand new one. still same message on boot - incorrect floppy drive type run setup (or close)
floppy is set correctly in bios, hooked up correctly.
next: cd-rw will read disks, but not burn.
and: with all three memory cards in slots, no boot at all, just a whole lot of beeps
and finally: 2nd ide port dies - except that the drives are connected correctly, run on the 1st port, and the hd's are definitely on and spinning on boot.
It says on the intel site that the ide ports in the bios have to be configured to auto, but there's no way to access it when the drives aren't recognized by the system.

so, any good ideas here? i hope so, cause this mess is driving me to :badpc
Unfortunately, if it is the board itself, I don't have an extra penny to spend on a new one, so I'm stuck making the best of this one.

443714 2006-04-04 06:03:00 If it has worked before, you don't need an updated BIOS.

I suspect that I know what is wrong with your 2nd IDE controller: you've got that cable plugged in the wrong way, which will short out some lines. Look for the pin1 stripe on the cable (or the little arrow beside pin 1 on the connector if you have one of the round cables).

That will make things misbehave. ;) It's unlikely to boot, for a start. ;)

443715 2006-04-04 06:26:00 I doubt flashing the BIOS will actually be of any benefit to you.

I would try resetting the BIOS (either via a jumper which will be shown in the motherboard manual, or taking the BIOS battery out for a minute or 2)

AS Graham said .. double check all cables are correctly installed.
Double check all drives are correctly configured
Best to have optical drives on IDE2 and harddrives on IDE1 .. make sure drives have correct jumper settings (as this can cause some funny issues) .. in other words, if the drive is master, make sure it is jumpered as such

443716 2006-04-04 07:13:00 :groan: well, the good news is... zilch.
checked all cables, jumpers and switches. removed battery and reset the bios using the jumper - still no 2nd IDE port.
also, it says incorrect floppy drive installed. run setup. in setup it is set correctly.
made sure all bios settings said "auto". rebooted. same bloody mess - nothing on the 2nd IDE port is being acknowledged. :waughh:
could anything else be wrong with this thing?!?

443717 2006-04-04 07:20:00 Do the activity lights on drives plugged into the 2nd IDE come on, and stay on, as long as power is on?
Does it boot with no cable in the 2nd IDE socket?

Does the activity light on the floppy turn on and stay on as long as the power is on? If so, its cable is reversed at one end.
