443989 2006-04-05 12:49:00 Fan goes on. Also I left the HDD unplugged but the HDD light remained on.

Hyena 300Watt (aka el cheapo)

Don't need to worry about that any more, its in the trash minus the actually good ball bearing fan

Is the modem still connected?

443990 2006-04-05 22:32:00 Modem? No.

Just PSU, CPU, RAM from my brother (cuzzies ones pushing up daisies), HDD, Floppy, VGA.

443991 2006-04-05 22:42:00 I had this problem once the news was all bad.

The motherboard was full of leaking and bulging capacitors and one had shorted big time because the top was blown right off it and the contents splattered all around the inside of the computer.

Unfortunately the protection system in the power supply wasn’t up to it and it blew as well. A Hyena supply also. ;)

443992 2006-04-05 23:02:00 *Sigh* I wonder if my uncle is willing to pay up for the replacement parts.

He's a bit of a scrooge...

Then again I ought to charge him labour for diagnosing it, since all I get from him is diddly squat. :p

443993 2006-04-05 23:04:00 Remove all drives and any cards, apart from the Graphics card. See if the screen comes up with the usual "no floppy drive detected". If so, something unplugged is causing the system to be dragged down.

If there is still no response, change out, or test in another machine, the memory and Video card. If they check out OK, then it just leaves you the motherboard or CPU fault.

Sad to say I have experienced a similar occurence with a Hyena PSU about 6 months ago. When it blew, it took out everything that had a 12V rail to it. The only survivors were the memory and CPU. The customer was not a happy camper.

Memory got toasted, the video card and all other components are fine and as I said, my search is narrowed down to the mobo or CPU.

443995 2006-04-06 00:31:00 Well I've just discovered that the CPU, RAM and Mobo are in Silicon Heaven.

Thats the end of this thread then

443996 2006-04-06 10:54:00 Check the capacitors (the big 2200uf ones) on your mobo regularly for signs of bulging/leaking. Some of the caps inside Hyena power supplies are also destined for eventual meltdown since they are the same type as the mobo's caps. Failure of any one of those caps can avalanche the mobo into self-destruction. Replace those caps early if you can. See here (http://www.badcaps.net/) for more info on this plague. braindead (1685)
