443977 2006-04-08 12:38:00 Hi Gumdigger

I have done this between my two comps., like yourself, although I'm running XP Home on the host, and my internet connection is through dial-up. The second comp. had '98, but I've since upgraded that to 2000.

I originally tried manually setting IP addresses in the second comp. (as you did), but found that didn't work. Switching to automatic identification seemed to solve that problem.

I connect both computers through a cross-over ethernet cable on a LAN, so the internet connection is made to the Host through my modem, and the sharing is done through the LAN connection.

The main problem I had was needing to install NetBEUI protocol on both PCs in my LAN properties. XP does not come with NetBEUI pre-installed, and Microsoft does not support it anymore. However, you should be able to find it on your installation CD. The Help files will tell you where to find it. If not, you can get it from the Net.

From there I made sure I had 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks' checked in my LAN properties, mapped the drives, and everything works fine.

P.S. I thoroughly recommend you get rid of AVG Free and purchase the full edition ASAP. Free editions are notorious for not picking up known viruses.

Cheers
