443617 2006-04-09 06:10:00 Yes Graham I have Ubuntu, Knoppix 3.4, Morppix 0.4, all courtesy of a mate, who, shall we say found Linux less than satisfactory. :groan:

You may remember trying to help us to install a Dick Smith Win Modem but, to no avail. :(

Anyway, I enjoy a challenge so I’ll try the Knoppix for starters as according to the instructions Morphix requires a Pentium ll and 128 of RAM, neither of which we have. Ubuntu doesn’t say what it requires, but it does say it’s an alternative to XP so I guess that rules that out too.

Wish me luck. :D

443618 2006-04-09 06:17:00 Thanks Nigel, I'll make some enquiries.

Fancy you knowing they existed and I didn't. :D

443619 2006-04-09 20:31:00 Well, I’ve got Knoppix on screen although I felt very uncomfortable to find I’d “Passed an undefined Mode Number” . :(

What do I do now?

On the left hand side of the screen I found a Hard Disk Icon so I clicked on it and got the following message .
Hard Disk [/mnt/Auto]
Hard Disk (cloop)[/Knoppix]
Hard Disk (hda1)[mnt/hda1]
Hard Disk (root)[/]
Hard Disk (Sys)[/sys]

All of which is gobblygook to me . :(

If the above messages aren’t helpful, how do I search the ISA slots to see if it can find the controller or even an unidentified object?

Anyway, I’ll have a crash around whilst absorbing my morning tannic acid fix . ;)

443620 2006-04-10 05:10:00 I dug out some of my old (one from 1996 whose author who says he still preferred MFM drives to IDE ) books last night and tried to suss out what is happening. My impression is that we need to disable the IDE interfaces. ;) The MFM drive is on an MFM controller, and there's probably a shiortage of IRQs. The BIOS will almost certainly recognise that it's there, and there might even be a BIOS extension ROM on the WD1003 controller. Then see what happens. ;)

That's if the LInux doesn't get you going.

That "mnt/hda1" looks as if it's the one. Start a command terminal and
do ls -l /mnt/hda1 It looks as if it has been mounted and mount will confirm that. That will show the size (probably in 1k units) .If neither of those gives any encouragement, mkdir /mnt/mydisk , mount -t auto /dev/hda1 /mnt/mydisk should work. (you will need to be"root" for this, with a "#" prompt, not "$".
