444070 2006-04-05 07:46:00 Howdy folks,
Need your opinion on something. I usually fix computers for friends for free. Now, this one is a tough one. Here are the symptoms:

1. Restarts when under heavy load
2. 3d Graphics are shoddy.

The computer POST's perfectly.

Something caught my attention though - I have the side of the computer open, and when I opened it, the CPU fan started making a grating noise I've never heard before, and vibrated *heavily*. I tapped the center of it and the noise/vibrations disappeared.

Since the graphics are onboard, I have plenty of reason to say it's the CPU. It's hard to get into windows to run CPU tests, so I can't use the results. The CPU is an old Athlon XP.

Before I go recommending stuff to my friend willy-nilly, I want your opinions on whether or not it's the CPU.

444071 2006-04-05 07:57:00 Sounds like the CPU is overheating because the fan is knackered. Change the fan.

CPU gets warmer when under loads so is in more need of a working fan. Make sure the case fans area also working correctly, its no good moving the heat away from the processor if it isn't being moved out of the case.

CPU overheating probably as has been said. Check its temp in the BIOS.
You can replace those fans easy enough.

3D Graphics are shoddy and always will be because its using onboard graphics. The cure for that is a decent separate graphics card.

A small blanket of dust will act like a blanket, trapping and increasing the heat on your CPU

444074 2006-04-05 19:47:00 I'm aware of the whole "graphics are shoddy" bit - but I meant, they aren't rendered properly whilst in 3D games.

There's no dust on the CPU fan that I can see, but I'll have another look.
