444464 2006-04-06 11:56:00 Has anyone recently noticed ihugs usage meter recording a lot more than what they know they have already downloaded?

I am currently on their (now old) 10+10 128/2048 broadband plan. Between yesterday and today I downloaded some large files totalling around 4.8GB. This was confirmed by checking their total combined size in Windows Explorer which closely matched the total on another program I was running that contained its own internet usage meter.

Tonight, I logged on to my ihug account and saw that their usage meter recorded me as downloading nearly double at 9.4GB over the past two days.

The guy I spoke to on helpdesk wasn't much help and basically said that their meter was 100% correct and there was nothing else they could do.

Very strange, would anyone have any ideas where that extra 4.6GB may have come from other than the ihug usage meter being faulty?

444465 2006-04-06 20:12:00 Their meter isn't always correct. According to that meter I only used 309MB last month.
I normally average about 50GB per month, and last month was no exception.

444466 2006-04-06 20:26:00 You probably also get metered for all data sent as well as downloaded. And downloaded includes overheads and data that needed to be resent so you will always have a total higher than the final file size in Explorer. PaulD (232)
444467 2006-04-06 20:44:00 The amount of sent data in that time period was < 1GB, still well short of 4.6GB variation. Also, according to the ihug faq, upload traffic isn't counted towards monthly usage. They are the only ISP I know in NZ that don't count uploads. Alank (10156)
444468 2006-04-06 20:48:00 Thanks

So much for the helpdesk guy claiming that their usage meter is 100% correct!!

444469 2006-04-07 12:41:00 ISPs do tend to believe in the infalibility of their usage meters, but they can be wrong. Last year the Paradise dialup meter showed that I had used over 12 hours in less than 60 minutes! Vince (406)
444470 2006-04-10 06:26:00 Finally, quote from ihug on another newsgroup:

'Yes there looks to be a problem with the usage checker, we are looking into
it at the moment . Will let you know when we get confirmation as to what the
issue is and when it will be fixed . We'll certainly make sure that if any
(obviously there are some) erroneous usage has been applied then we will
have it corrected, so will not impact your allocation for the month' .

Hopefully, not too long
