444507 2006-04-07 02:12:00 I'm sure the HD should be before, but it might have been because you were booting off the CD maverickoc (7240)
444508 2006-04-07 04:52:00 The problem is i can only boot from CD, so i can't work out how to apply the firmware updrade if i can't boot from Harddrive Morgenmuffel (187)
444509 2006-04-07 05:02:00 It might help to change the drive jumpers so the hard disk becomes disk0. (/dev/xxx are 'hardware addresses", not like Windows C, D etc). But it shouldn't matter. The firmware will just look for a disk with a boot sector. Somehow you're not getting the boot sector loaded with the right contents. (I think ;) ) Graham L (2)

I am 99% sure the harddrive is set to master(i triple checked it myself), which is why i found it odd that it was being called disk1 rather than disk0,

I am really hoping this is something i can fix without having to dismantle the mac again ( they are a nightmare compared to pcs - even the old HPs are easier to get at things in)

Cheers

444511 2006-04-07 08:19:00 Possible there is something wrong with the HD? It's such an old computer, I personally wouldn't bother fixing it if there is a hardware problem. maccrazy (6741)
444512 2006-04-08 00:35:00 The hard-drive works fine in other (non mac machines) I just don't understand why the system isn't seeing the system folder on it on boot up, it sees it when i view from the cd

Anyway got a few other things to try

Ok you have got to promise not to laugh but well this was the 1%, I'd checked the drive and all was fine, only problem was I checked the old drive i'd removed,
some how i got my drive jumpers mixed up and set the old mac drive to master (italready was) and popped it in the kids PC and then promptly set the new mac harddrive to slave and popped it in the mac, it wasn't until i dismantled the kids PC to work out why nothing was working that the penny dropped

I feel phenomenally dumb, I am actually coming to you via osX as when I changed the jumper on the HD the machine booted into osX, everything seems to work which is just as well as to do firmware upgrades i apparently need os9.1 installed, and as i only have os 9.0 installed i can't work ot how to boot into that to upgrade it to 9.2 which i think is a free upgrade

Cheers all and thanks for the help

anyone with an unwanted os9.2 disk is welcome to send a copy of it my way
*** Just for the mods, I do have a legitimate copy of os9 which can be freely upgraded to 9.2 I think so it shouldn't be illegal should it? If it is just wipe this last part of the post

Cheers

And I thought losing a screw in the back of an iMac was painful... :D

Anyway, can you not see the Classic system folder as available under the Classic or Startup Disk System Preferences?

Or try this (www.bombich.com)

Once you can boot to 9, just download the updaters from Apple (you have to update to 9.1 and then to 9.2 If I remember correctly). I'm not sure if 9.2 was ever released as a retail boxed version (it was supplied with new macs - usually along with OS X).
