444762 2006-04-08 12:53:00 hmm... I remember coming across CDs that were locked into only playing on Windows Media Player, maybe it had something to do with DRMs, although I know there was an uproar about it and it had to change, maybe those CDs got recalled.

Cheers,

444763 2006-04-08 16:10:00 On the 'puter I use here, I have not installed the WDRM "update" that M$ wanted me to have...and just for giggles, I DID install it on another one....

Guess which one plays anything I throw at it? Guess again which one acts like yours?

I suggest that people do NOT get that update...when it shows in the update scan, just click on the + in front of it, and then click on "Hide this update" and forget about it.

This seems remotely like the Sony screw-up a few months ago that associated your optical devices to run on new software and you could not remove that without crippling your hardware.

Oh, pants. Erm, how do you uninstall this update?

444765 2006-04-09 16:31:00 Check first to see if you actually got the update in the UPDATE HISTORIES area on the Windows update screen . If so, I found I can see mine in Spybot S&D which I trust more to actually remove things when I want them gone by shredding the files I click .

If you toggle the ADVANCED version of Spybot you can access the shredder and either drag the offending files there and chop them up to the number of times you want, or use the UNINSTALL area to remove the file(s) . Spybot shreds them either way you use it .

At this time, I am going to leave one of my towers with the update, and the rest of them without it . I want to see what gives, digitally that is, and how much denial of use I have on that one .

444766 2006-04-10 07:25:00 Hmmm, I pretty much delete everything I find on Spybot- guess I had better reread that instruction manual in case I've done some damage (such as it is- will they ever make an idiot's guide I wonder? :) ) . Back to the drawing board- again!

Thanks again Joe, and I'l be interested in seeing what happens with your experiment!
