444873 2006-04-07 21:24:00 My b****y damaged CPU saga continues. I tried to straighten a bent pin on my P4 2.4 chip and it snapped off. I believe these things can be repaired for 20 - 30 bucks? Anyone know where I can get it done, if in fact it's possible?

Thanks.

444874 2006-04-08 00:10:00 i would juts chuck it in and give it a go.....

about 30% of the pins are ground and the CPU will work if it one short.

444876 2006-04-20 00:55:00 This is a bump.

Tried the chip in an otherwise working machine but it ain't a happening thing.

Can anyone advise who to take it to for repair?

Thanks.

444877 2006-04-20 07:05:00 I don't know the answer Greg, but I do know that such a repair would require some very precise micro-welding, as solder would not have the strength. Since it would probably be a rare need, that kind of service would more likely lie with optical technicians (who can do a fantastic job of welding glasses frames) or other micro-technology experts.

The risk of destroying the chip with heat is also very real, and I don't know if there are any cold-welding technologies readily available either.

It might be a gonner I'm afraid.

Silly question I suppose, but have you Googled for the global perspective?

444878 2006-04-20 10:26:00 Is the P4 chip still under warranty? If the bent pin is as a result of the manufacturer's misconduct, then (I admit I know nothing about these things) you might be able to get a refund or replacement.

Cheers :)
