445040 2006-04-20 08:44:00 I just got my ADSL transferred to Quicksilver this afternoon. It's now 19:40hrs, and I am fuming! To be frank, Quicksilver's ADSL product is way inferior to that of Orcon's. I'm only getting a max of 500 ~ 800 kbps. I get anything from 1.9 ~2.0 mbit on Orcon (that's when I'm still on the old 2mbit plan), at any given time of the day.

I'm giving it another 36 hours and if things don't improve, I'm moving back to Orcon even if it means $35 more a month for 30GB. To hell with Quicksilver!

445041 2006-04-20 09:10:00 Thanks for letting us know dude. Many internet companies is using Telecom cables, if you want a faster internet reliable speed is JetStream. Last time I use dial-up chaning to another company was totally crap the speed is awful and capped me even for a 56k connection from Telstra Clear. Telecom didn't capped me but it was few yrs ago.
Can you explain why do you need so high GB allowance? My HDD is getting filled up even for a 20GB 2Mbit plan. N.Z. internet is very expensive. NTL is UK is supplying an internet allowance up to 70GB and a speed of more than 10Mbit p/sec. And compare to China internet speed is not that bad as you use peer to peer networking software to download files from them. Can't believe Chinese internet are faster than N.Z.:annoyed:
Hehe, maybe time changed I should be going to China because many Europeans and Americans go to China for jobs these days, China technology is not bad at all but the goods is usually break down easily, because of the price that we are paying for.

445042 2006-04-20 09:37:00 um..mine's not that bad
but..3.5mbps?? more like 2 and a bit more for me

but if it gets busy at night..like when i'm actually home and using comp..speed can drop to 1mbps or less

kinda..um.. fast when you don't use it ..and slow when you need it

and the port blocking thing
seems kinda werid.. you can connect to others..but others can't connect to you..
that's what i think is happening anyway.. not sure

too bad orcon doesn't have a plan i'm comfortable with
bad combination of cap and budget for me i guess

445043 2006-04-20 09:43:00 U mean you're downloading stuff from Peer to peer networking software like Kazza? MTLance (6768)
445044 2006-04-20 22:49:00 the speed i'm commenting are from nzadsl's speed test
just using that as a standard sorta thing

i duno how kazza will perform if that's what you are asking
havn't used it in years
duno if i can get it to work in wine in kubuntu anywayz

445045 2006-04-21 05:04:00 Same haven't used Kazza for ages due to critical spyware alert and removal. Kazza connection is quite fast depending on users, and internet connection type they use. MTLance (6768)
445046 2006-04-21 07:40:00 Anyone feeling the pain of waiting for international sites to load yet? :) It seems Quicksilver, iHug, and Orcon are experiencing international bandwidth outage due to a fibre cut on the supplier's side.

On a sidenote, my Quicksilver ADSL is performing alright now, that is on national sites. I get anyting from 2.8 ~ 3.2 mbit on national sites (tested on nzdsl.co.nz) and I get only 200 ~ 600 kbps for international sites (tested on speakeasy.net/speedtest) but I can't hold that against them since other ISPs are also reporting speed slower than normal on international sites.

445047 2006-04-25 14:28:00 I am currently with quicksilver, I have been with them for about a year now,
and so far i'm not happy with their service.
I am an online gamer, playing CS and World of Warcraft mainly.
Currently for the past 2 weeks I have been getting a 130-150ms ping to local NZ gameservers, actually 130 is the lowest, previously on quicksilver I may have recieved a 60ms ping, but recently they have taken a turn for the worst, and over the past 2 months I cant remember a ping to a local NZ game server below 100ms.
Overseas latency is even worse, I normally get 400-500 pings to Warcraft servers, and recently its been 1500-2000ms, basically unplayable.

I have complained multiple times, only thing that has happened is things have gotten worse, much more of this and I will be changing ISP.

As for the bandwidth, very very below par international bandwidth, international FTP servers i get 120KB from them, and i currently have a 3.5MB line.
So i decided to test out if it was the FTP server or my connection, so I log into the work computers remotely, they have a telstra clear business line 2MB unlimited, go to the same website start the download and I got a whopping 220KB.

Same thing with Bit Torrent, downloads are slow and below par, especially since I am on a limited usage plan. BT speeds of approx 100KB, and at work i recieve 200KB, same torrent.

I currently have a 3.5MB/128k line through quicksilver.

445048 2006-04-26 11:43:00 with 3.5/128
after testing for a while now..my speed is more like 2.2

d/l 3 diff linux iso from 3 diff nz servers and max out around 270 when internet is going smooth..
so..yea but.. i don't tink i'm gona complain too much
still feeling fast coz was using 256 before..maybe i'll complain when i get use to the speed~

445049 2006-04-28 06:40:00 um..just to help some people deciding..this might help..

quicksilver blocks your ports
so can't have servers and stuff

Hi,

Just to clear this up, Quicksilver does not block ports, or port-shape at all. The helpdesk were correct in their information.
