| 445308 | 2006-04-10 01:28:00 | Hi I was wondering how I would go about speeding up an IBM thinkpad's startup. It has Norton Antivirus 2005 which I think takes ages to load and all this IBM stuff like the message center which I would like to disable. I did it using msconfig but I want to do it properly. It's an intel celeron M with Windows xp SP2 |

| 445309 | 2006-04-10 01:39:00 | By all means, get rid of that dog Norton's! It is a resource hog! Before you kill it though, get another AV like AVG Free . Now, after you download AVG Free, also get Spybot S&D from SaferNetworking (the TRUE home site!) and set it up with the advanced mode . From there you can toggle off or on any of the start-ups as you see fit . I run Spybot as an auxillary security program (none can do it all anyway) . Here's the links: This is AVG Free . grisoft . com/doc/1" target="_blank">free . grisoft . com DO NOT use the mirror sites softpedia or planetmirror . . they are red-lined right now with horrible spyware and trojans . This is Spybot S&D http://www . safer-networking . org/ There are some mirror sites that redirect you to spoofed Spybot S&D sites that look like a duck, walk like one, but cannot swim . . watch out for the phonies! |

| 445310 | 2006-04-10 02:50:00 | Thanks! The thing is, the subscription has not expired yet and the AVG free interface is very ugly. Does AVG pick up as many viruses as Norton? We have Windows defender and Ccleaner installed. I have found spybot unstable from previous experience. |

| 445311 | 2006-04-10 03:16:00 | iam not sure if u are femilar with the msconfig comand - their u will be able to costumize the start up programs. deselecting programs that u dont need at start up will help. in addition u can use the program tuneup utilities which will optimize your computer for the type of work u do most. hope fully this helps |

| 445313 | 2006-04-10 04:29:00 | Thanks! The thing is, the subscription has not expired yet and the AVG free interface is very ugly . Does AVG pick up as many viruses as Norton? We have Windows defender and Ccleaner installed . I have found spybot unstable from previous experience . I cannot imagine any problems with Spybot . . . unstable? I don't think so unless it's been hacked . One of the first things a lot of nasties do is change the settings in Spybot . . . . that's why you need to run the advanced version and check the IGNORE PRODUCTS area from time to time and make sure that NOTHING'S checked in that list . This is the only thing I have found that could even remotely described as unstable . It seems that the first thing nasty things do is try to change the scan values for Spybot . . . and that's a sign that they've come a'knocking . . . just check it out some times . Rules for SpyBot: get all the updates, at least once a week if not more often; Immunize after every update; check the disabled scans (the ones with the check marks are not being tested or protected for) in the IGNORE PRODUCTS list; turn on TeaTimer and lock down the IE host files . REMEMBER THIS> Not any one anti-program does it all! Get several and they offer a pretty good wall of security . You are, however allowed only two firewalls . . . one physical (a router is good or an old 'puter used as one) and one Software program . . . I use Windows Defender . . . it is as good as any . In my opinion, :2cents: money spent on Norton or McAfee is just wasted . . . it is slow, cumbersome, a resource hog and generally couldn't carry security in a peach basket . With so many free programs out there, I am amazed that those two even exist anymore . AVG Free with Windows Defender, Ad-Aware, (Not ADWARE!), SpywareBlaster, Belarc (for snapshots of your system), HiJackThis to cure the occasional malware invasion, and CrapCleaner and MSBSA (Microsoft's Baseline Security Adviser) make a neat package . . . and here's the good part . . . they all play well together and don't step on each other's toes . I have not had a damaging or malware problem for a long time . . . in fact it is 'way past my last year's Spring Burndown . . . it hasn't been necessary . . . yet . I run behind a router for the physical firewall it provides and stay offa porno sites, game sites and . warez areas . IRC sites are havens for crap as are P2P areas . Don't run any 'FREE SCANS FOR YOUR SYSTEM' as they are more than likely to insert something to either give you false positives or actually install keyloggers, screenshotters or other forms of spyware . Get SiteAdviser (FireFox extension), and USE FireFox . . . internet explorer is poison . . . a hack or spyware insertion waiting to happen . For the times when you HAVE to run on IE, install SpoofStick to at least tell you where you went when you clicked on that link . Get a custom Host File . Some of the things built on Internet Explorer platform(s): AOL NETSCAPE (AOL owns it nowadays and it is not like the good old Mozilla codec it was at one time!) Yahoo! MSN MESSENGER AND THE WHOLE MSN SUITE and . . . . . . . . . of course, Internet Explorer (Mr . Bill$ baby) The reality of it is this: If you use Windows as your platform, you gotta become an IT professional . I use Windows, enjoy it and protect it as well as I can . . . and I have most of the Windows Platforms at my disposal from NT to XP-Pro and all the in-betweens too . I actually like Windows and have a lot of fun with it . There are people out there who want to hurt Mr . Gates and you and I are in the area of destruction when the bombs hit . . . that's a good reason to stay current with your anti-stuff and keep off the sites that are gonna hurt you . Use OPM . . . Other People's Money . . . in the form of freeware for security . . . . even M$ offers some (at least for now anyway), and you're miles or kilometers ahead if you spend money on hardware instead of anti-garbage (IMHO) that Symantec and others (read: $$$) are trying to foist upon you . |

| 445314 | 2006-04-10 04:37:00 | Thank you for you comprehensive response. I think AVG should work on its interface, however. Avast! Antivirus is another apparently good solution but I disliked it's interface too. Some other good small tools can be found at grc.com. What do you think about Zonealarm? |

Antivirus is another apparently good solution but I disliked it's interface too. Some other good small tools can be found at grc.com. What do you think about Zonealarm? ZA is very comprehensive and also intrusive and a bully...it is very powerful but most people don't like it for it's depth of control.....and since it is a firewall, it falls under the limit of one physical and one software...if you want to run Defender, then you cannot run ZA too...they collide...... Avast is supposed to be a good player...I cannot vouch for it as I never had it...and I am not sure of it's playing with the others on my list either.... |

| 445316 | 2006-04-10 04:48:00 | But if you just have the basic Zone Alarm firewall then you can have defender because defender is just a real time spyware protection tool? Anyway, do you know how to disable Access IBM Message Center from startup? |

Anyway, do you know how to disable Access IBM Message Center from startup? Be careful...the one software and one hardware firewall limit still exist......and ZA and Windows Defender are both about the same thing as far as real-time and background ethics are concerned..ergo: collision. Spybot has a great tool to toggle off or on any and all start-up programs without damaging any of them...it's in the TOOLS area under STARTUP PROGRAMS, but only in the ADVANCED mode of operation.....you can halt IBM Message center there.... |
