445140 2006-04-09 06:49:00 I just did a scan on "Shields Up" and found that Port 21 and Port 22 is opened on my computer. Can someone explain to me in layman's term if this is a major security breach and should I be worried? Thanks. ephesus (2509)
445141 2006-04-09 07:01:00 From memory, those a the ports that a ftp server uses. If you didn't install ftp server software, I would suggest blocking the ports Greven (91)
445142 2006-04-09 11:19:00 Port 21 is FTP. How does one acutally block a Port? Any suggestions? ephesus (2509)

445144 2006-04-09 11:29:00 Just helped a relative upgrade to xtra broadband. It uses a basic Dlink router. Not sure if there is a hardware firewall. Norton Internet Security is installed. ephesus (2509)
445145 2006-04-09 11:58:00 I'm running an oldeish version of norton personal firewall. I'll give you instructions based on that.

Double click on the firewall icon & on the screen that comes up, click on personal firewall & click on configure (to the right). In the firewall settings, click on advanced & select general rules. create a new rule to block TCP ports 21 & 22

445146 2006-04-09 12:03:00 If your using a router then the ports will be open on the router not the PC. gcarmich (10068)

The ports have to be open on both the router & the computer for shelds up to detect them to be open.

I think that particular modem doesn't have a built in firewall - it forwards everything to the computer it is connected to

445148 2006-04-09 21:51:00 I am sure the DLInk router doesn't have a firewall. I used a Netgear myself and all ports are "stealth" when scannned by Shields Up. Does it pose a real security risk if these ports are opened?

I will try the settings on the Norton Firewall. Does Windows Firewall protect these ports automatically?
