| 445850 | 2006-04-12 02:47:00 | I have a USB 2 problem that is driving me nuts ! The mother board is an Albatron KT600 pro running XP Home sp2 with all upgrades. For normal 1.1 USB devices, there is no problem and they work fine. SOME USB2 work fine as USB2 but others only work as 1.1 and bring up a message This device can perform faster for list of available ports click here If you click, it opens a window that shows VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller USB Root Hub (6 ports) then 6 unused ports. Obviously, the computer is aware the plugged in device is USB2 why will it not work ? (The same devices (Apple IPOD mini) works fine as USB2 on my ASUS laptop.) Why does the USB2 in the computer insist the ports are running as 1.1 ? (and they are as download times are terrible) If I go to control panel again and under system, look at USB, it shows USB composite device (probably my web cam) USB mass storage (the IPOD) 4 x USB Root Hubs Via rev 5 or later USB universal host controller (x3) And finally VIA USB Enhanced Host controller If I then DELETE all these USB ports, then ask it to scan for new ones, it comes back with the same devices. Does some one understand exactly what it is trying to tell me ? I know I have 6 available USB2 ports according to the specs for the board. I know it will work on some devices as USB2 without problem BUT other devices work only as USB 1.1 EVEN THOUGH THE COMPUTER KNOWS THEY ARE USB2 HELP please |

I've come across that. What I found fixed it was downloading the Motherboard USB 2.0 drivers and installing them - not letting XP do it itself. Of course some MBs don't have USB 2.0 drivers - it will tell you to install SP1 or SP2 - in which case you need to use the VIA ones or whatever.... Don't ask me why it did it though.... |

Did you use the right header for the usb jacks, are all the usb ports at the back, are there any front ports. do you have the mobo manual thats points out the usb headers? Zqwerty has the idea, the forum have this which could be of help forums.viaarena.com |

| 445855 | 2006-04-13 08:11:00 | Answer appears to be the computer used twisted wires to the front of the machine where there are 2 USB sockets. Eventually in frustration, I pulled the computer out (not an easy job) and found that USB2 appears to work on both the direct motherboard USB sockets and also the other USB rear leaded connector. Checking inside the computer, I find the rear USB sockets are using shielded cable whereas the front sockets are only twisted wires. With great difficulty I rewired the front socket using the shielded cable and suddenly the I pod work fine on USB2. It would appear that USB2 with its higher speed, is much more critical to wiring etc. Thanks to those who offered suggestions. |
