445779 2006-04-11 15:52:00 Hackers have released code for a cross-platform virus that could infect Linux and Windows computers.

The virus, which has been given the names Virus.Linux.Bi.a/ Virus.Win32.Bi.a, was reported at the end of last week by security firm Kaspersky Lab. Researchers worry that the malicious code may be part of a disturbing new trend of viruses that can run on Windows, as well as other operating systems that have been largely ignored by hackers

Read about it here: www.techworld.com would have thought "compulsive message forwarding" was the first true cross platform virus. Such viri relied on a weakness found in front of the keyboard on most computer systems to reproduce and spread itself. The great teddy-bear virus was a classic example of this, where a simple message was spread by exploiting the gullability factor found in components front of keyboards. Damage would then be done by exploiting the same common weakness, and using it to remove part of the windows operating system which the message assured users was indeed a virus. Of course most CMF just spreads and annoys.

However news of a potentual crossplatform virus that exploits parts of the system found behind the keyboard is worrying.
