445608 2006-04-10 23:06:00 My computer clock is losing time. Does this mean I am in for a new motherboard battery? What will happen eventually if I don't do anything? worl (8599)
445609 2006-04-10 23:15:00 yes, time for new battery. if that doesn't fix it, it is time to replace the mainboard, as leaking capacitors can do this.
if you don't fix this the OS will spit the dummy, because it is not getting valid time stamps for file writes.

445610 2006-04-10 23:15:00 Yup, sounds like u need another battery .

Nothing will happen . Time will most probably just keep going backwards . And the BIOS may lose its settings . If you've changed the BIOS settings recently .

They're only $3 - $3 . 50 or something for a new battery . Not much at all .

I think most programs also rely on the right time / year . You may get a program which runs out / expires the same day you installed it .

Coz it looks at the day/mth/year etc, the clock is currently set to .

445611 2006-04-10 23:17:00 Computer clocks losing time is usually the first sign that the battery is failing. If the battery goes dead flat the computer won't turn on and all the BIOS settings are likely to be lost which can sometimes be a hassle to restore manually in older computers. Best to replace it soon. pilgrim (2373)
445612 2006-04-10 23:31:00 Or it might just be the computer's natural inability to keep accurate time, in which case use the Internet time synchronisation built into Windows (XP) Greg (193)
445613 2006-04-11 06:28:00 Thank you all for the great response. I have a Dell Optiplex GX110 and have found that it has a 3volt CR2032 coin cell. Having difficulty finding where to buy. worl (8599)
445614 2006-04-11 06:31:00 Dick Smith Electronics, Jaycar, Warehouse (probably), Warehouse Stationery (certainly), most computer shops, ... , possibly a mall shoerepair/watch battery/key cutting kiosk, Graham L (2)
445615 2006-04-11 06:35:00 Thanks Graham. Didn't realise it was that easy. I was looking on the net. worl (8599)
445616 2006-04-11 06:37:00 And even Foodtown sell them.

In the battery section.

445617 2006-04-11 06:40:00 Just be careful ... get a good light so you can see what you are doing. The latch on some battery clips is easier to break than replace. ;) The "case" is positive, unlike normal dry cells, so the plain side (positive, marked wth a "+" and the manufacturer's info) is on top.
