445401 2006-04-10 04:45:00 Well you guys kindly helped me to nut out the problem installing zone alarm - and for that many thanks . I wonder if you can help with this little poser . I have an Xtra account and am wanting to access my email via Outlook Express .

This has soaked up 6 hours of support from xtra and still I can't check my emails . (Remember I'm a total newbie to PC and this laptop is certainly providing the learning experience I took it on to for . )

According to Xtra Help, all the settings in my machine are correct and the mail should check fine . It doesn't . They have concluded that it's a local machine problem - I'm on my own (with only sea biscuits and bilge water) to find out for myself what might be causing the problem .

When I check the mail, this is the message I get:

__________________________________________________ ____________

The server responded with an error . Account: 'pop3 . xtra . co . nz', Server:
'pop3 . xtra . co . nz', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

I have updated the Explorer package, I'm running Win98SE with all updates current, Outlook is operating fine so far as I can tell and I'm able to surf to my heart's content . I'm running AVG and Zone Alarm but with both these disabled, (in one case uninstalled) same problem persists . There is no other antivirus software running - if any other info is needed, I'll happily supply .

Can any of you Win-jockeys help a struggling Mac convert? After all, checking email isn't a big ask, eh?

Just a thought, when I configure a Mac to this account it also cannot check my xtra mail account but has no problem with my other ISP . Xtra say that also is a local machine problem . A friend entered my account details into her pc laptop and it checked my mail fine . Aaaarrrrgghh!

Cheers

445402 2006-04-10 05:05:00 Port #110 is probably being blocked by something.

Try opening a command prompt and type the following.

telnet pop3.xtra.co.nz 110

It should connect to their mail server. If it fails to connect then there is your problem!

Also, do xtra support SSL connections to mail? May pay to try disabling it.

445403 2006-04-10 05:16:00 Think SSL is disabled "Secure(SSL): No,". AVG's proxy still seems to be the thing actually trying to contact Xtra's POP3 server.

Try looking here for AVG's proxy being blocked by firewalls.

445404 2006-04-10 06:08:00 When checking mail with firewall off and AVG off the following message displayed:

______________________________________________

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop3.xtra.co.nz', Server: 'pop3.xtra.co.nz', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Does that help at all?

Cheers

445406 2006-04-10 10:59:00 You say you have an Xtra account, does that mean you are actually connected to Xtra or are you just referring to your Xtra mail account.
If your connection is with another ISP Xtra will not allow you to login to the Xtra pop server and this may explain why the Mac also does not work.
You need to connect to Xtra with a dialup or broadband account to be able to check an Xtra pop account.
