445336 2006-04-10 04:29:00 Hi all,

I recently (07/04) changed from Orcon 256 to Xnet 2Mbit plan. I have had slow downloads, and tests at nzdsl.co.nz show speeds ranging from 400 kbps to 700 kbps.
I rang the help desk at xnet, and the guy had me disconnect router, change cables, unplug phones, disable everything on my laptop, run the tests with another computer etc etc but still only achieving the speeds above. He then called Telecom, who reported everything was fine from their end, and so he has no idea what could be causing the problem. My router is reporting data rates of 2560 kbps down and 160 kbps up.

Any suggestions as to what could be causing this? I thought it could be my router, as it is a quite old el cheapo from Super Cheap PC, but the tech said if the router was stuffed, it was unlikely it would just slow the internet down, more likely it would kill it all together.

So, anyone got any ideas as to why this would be causing this?

TIA,

roddy

A few more things I probably should include: I live in central Auckland, the tech said the exchange I'm on isn't congested. Also, I ran speed tests all last night (I was up until ~3am doing a chem lab), and there was no noticable variation during peak/off-peak times.

445337 2006-04-10 04:46:00 probably not v helpful in sorting out your prob but did u chk out Xnet before joining? Friends/Family use them?

445338 2006-04-10 04:54:00 Nah didn't really have time to get too much feedback on them. Just joined them because they are cheap and have free national traffic.
They have excellent customer service though, have called 3 times, have yet to hear the phone ring twice before it's answered. And the people seem to know what they are talking about.

445339 2006-04-10 05:14:00 I just signed up with them a couple of days ago. I asked around for a while before I switched from Orcon & most people seem fairly happy with them. Everyone has been complainging about slow downloads lately so it might be a problem with telecom & they won't admit it (has happened before, will happen again) Greven (91)
445340 2006-04-10 05:23:00 What sorta download speeds are you getting from them Greven? roddy_boy (4115)
445341 2006-04-10 05:33:00 I haven't been switched over yet. How long did it take between you signing up & being switched over? Greven (91)
445342 2006-04-10 05:40:00 Signed up on about Tuesday, and I was gonna call back to confirm. Never got round to calling back, but on Friday they sent me a letter telling me I had been switched over. Pretty damn fast if you ask me. roddy_boy (4115)
445343 2006-04-10 05:50:00 Its Telecom. Look around the net at various forums. Since the speed "increaes" a lot of people are no getting rubbish download speeds. Including me. I did have a perfectly fine 2Mbps, now the router reports 4288 coonnection speed but my actual usable sppeds are barely 256k.
I'm still hassling them about it.

445344 2006-04-10 11:49:00 Got a call from Xnet this evening (fantastic service), telling me it was more than likely an overloaded exchange, even though Telecom denied it. roddy_boy (4115)

A note on the new plans from xtra... they are just a have... currently all 2Mb/s plans are only capped for upload speeds at 128k {or 512k if you pay for it}, the download setting is not rate shaped and therefore some customers experience full bandwidth available to their DSLAM (Exchange) this is usually 6Mb/s in Residential and 8Mb/s in commercial/business areas.
This means a bunch of 2Mb/s plans can burst well past their supposed limit... but the pitfall is they most likely dont get near 2Mb/s due to to high bandwidth utilisation usually associated with too many customers connected to each DSLAM.

By changing their Marketing plan, upgrading 2Mb/s plans to 3.5Mb/s plans is not an increase for them... it is an actual restriction... enginerring wise they merely add a rateshape to the download speed from unlimited to being limited to 3.5Mb/s.

Bandwidth wise it works out better for them, they will end up with more consistancey in service to customers... and most customers should see 1.5 to 2Mb/s more often. with offpeak times reaching the 3.5Mb/s speeds... dont forget ADSL plans are legally only gaurenteed to 64Kb/s and Burstable to your plan rate shape.
