446362 2006-04-15 01:59:00 On the bios flash I get the following:

"ULTRA 100BIOS HAS NOT BEEN INSTALLED BECAUSE THERE ARE NO DRIVERS ATTACHED"

OK..got this question:

I DO have an Ultra HDD in this tower (Old Dell 600 O/C'd) and I wonder what I am missing here.......is there some sorta utility that I should have installed b4 the extra HDD was installed?

Am I gonna get any change of performance from the HDD?

Do I get this from DELL or perhaps from a site by the manufacturer of the HDD?

446364 2006-04-15 02:54:00 So . . . . . . . . then do I assume that this is a BIOS problem? . . . or a Windows problem?

The drive is accessable and running and storing data, so I have to think it's running ok .
Here's the way I think it happened . . . . .

Since there are only places for two HDDS in the DEL on a single ribbon, I installed an EIDE expansion board on the MOBO, and plugged the new HDD into #1 slot on it . Maybe the first few times I didn't see the message . . . . . . or maybe it wasn't there . . . . . but it is now, about 2 weeks after the hardware install .

I ran BELARC and it told me it is running OK . . . . should I even worry?

Is there any reason to even look for a driver for this problem . . . if it's indeed a real problem?

446365 2006-04-15 03:04:00 I have a second hand computer that gives me that same message at boot up and it has never bothered me.It all still works fine. Pancake (6359)
446366 2006-04-15 04:07:00 That controller board may have BIOS extensions in a ROM which would normally be loaded at boot time . It may do this only if it has seen something in the fixed BIOS whicu it can link to (add itself to) .

I'd guess that your old Dell doesn't have ULTRA100 . So that controller and drive which can do that, don't bother . And lets you know about it . ;)

Of course, I could be wrong . :D

446367 2006-04-15 04:22:00 yeah I think my main PC will display this message too.

Tis is becuase I don't use the extra Promise Ultra 100 IDE controller chip, that the motherboard provides. Well, actually I think it is the RAID functionality that I don't use.

try reading this (www.techspot.com)

446368 2006-04-15 05:23:00 The expansion card I installed to open another EIDE connex is probably the problem . . . . . although I don't really SEE a problem other that the silly message . .

I never looked at the name on the expansion card . . maybe it was "Promise?" . . . . possibly!

That may be the reason for the "NO DRIVERS . . . etc" thing-y .

Right now, all is well and running and I might just leave sleeping dogs alone .

Next week, I am going to change all the RAIDs and convert it all to JBODs . With just 8 200/g HDDS for videos and MP3's, I am running outta space . That's my Enermax/SOYO unit . . . as for the DELL, I think I'll just let it run like it is for a while .

I might just experiment with that EIDE expansion card and install it into the SOYO for giggles and see if it can find that mysterious Ultra100 driver thing from it's own custom BIOS . . . . might even have to view all the entries on the MOBO Drivers CD-ROM again and see if it's there for me to use .

I know I cannot do much with the DELL as to adding functions like ULTRA100 drivers to it . . . it might be too old for that .

BTW: does anyone know the vintage of that ULTRA stuff? Is it current or old hat? I've been under medication for years and might've missed it .
