446339 2006-04-15 01:21:00 Hey folks. I just picked up a dell dimension xps 760R system - no hard drives, just the motherboard and case.
Question: Do I require any special system software to get it up and running?
I know that Compaq has it's own bios and was just wondering if I'm going to run into any problems when I switch over the drives.
Thanks.
hopefuilly now, most of my computer hassles will be a thing of the past....

446340 2006-04-15 01:47:00 The BIOS is stored in a chip on the motherboard, So what you are saying is you want to swap the HDD overto the new machine?

Are you going to reformat and reinstall Windows?

If it didn't come with any discs I should think not

446341 2006-04-15 01:48:00 Nope any OS should work. (Well windows / linux based).

Just as long as you get the right drivers etc for the mobo / LAN / soundcard etc.

Any hdd should work. It should be fine.

Only diff will be, there wont be any hidden partition on the new hdd if it had one before.

And you wont be able to restore whatever to its original settings, if it stuffs up somewhere.

If the hard drive you've got has something on it, you may have to reformat it, or do a repair install, if its got XP on it.

446342 2006-04-15 02:00:00 Okay, thanks guys.
That is good news. I am prepared to reinstall my OS if I have to. that's no big deal. i have another drive I can back up all my important programs and stuff on to.
Dumb question - since the "new" system is a pentium 3 and my current one is only a PII, will that make any significant difference? (Besides, the fact that it's better!)
Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to run into too many wierd problems first!!!

446343 2006-04-15 03:03:00 P2 should be ok , if you've got enough ram . How much ram is installed?

Depends on what u mean by programs .

If they've been installed already, install them again . Or they wont work properly .

Especially if you're using XP .

If you mean files that you've downloaded, then thats not a prob . Install them once you back them up / copy them to the new hdd .

Not by a huge amount but it will be noticeable, especially if loaded with plenty of RAM .

Try and find and download as many drivers for the motherboard, video card (if it has one), modem, etc before you format . It will make things a bit easier .

it has a 2.2 gb orb drive. what kind of drive is it and where can you find disks, driver, etc.?
I looked on the manufacturer's site (castle rock) but they don't have any drivers available for download.

446346 2006-04-15 03:56:00 You'll have to find out the brand/model of the mobo by opening up the case .

Or by using some program like Everest (if its still around), or Sisoft Sandra .

Castlerock is the brand of the motherboard?

I hope you're not planning on putting XP on this 2 . 2 GB, since XP will use 1 . 5GB for installing .
