| 446046 | 2006-04-13 07:04:00 | Sir, I am not an expert computer user. After downloading new files when we try to open it there comes a dialog box which wants you specify which programme is supposed to do it. But a user like me cannot correctly suggest which programme and if the wrong programme is given the file never opens in the future. The same programme tries to open it to no avail. How do I know which programme opens which file? How to rectify the mistakes made already? Please help me! Sreek |

| 446047 | 2006-04-13 07:19:00 | Welcome to PressF1. Don't worry about it: the fact that Windows asks you means it doesn't know. ;) Downloaded objects are often compressed files, often with a '.zip" or ".rar" ending ("extension") to the name. If you haven't got the appropriate uncompressor, Windows can't do anything. Download a trial version of WinRAR or WinZip for these. For other files, the source might tell you to use a particular programme to use. When you do find the appropriate programme for a file which has the wrong "association" you can correct that by right clicking on the icon of the file, then select "Open With". Make sure the "Use this always" box is checked and select the name of the corrrect programme in that list. |
