445953 2006-04-12 22:15:00 Hello,
Im trying to install a 56k modem into a family members computer. Windows detects the modem on startup and self installs the modem (without a conflict in the system -> device drivers section). Then when I go to dial the modem an error pops up saying "Modem is not installed correctly". I have tried installing the drivers off the original modem cd but when I do this an error pops up saying "cannot locate hardware". Has anyone run into this before?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Ryan

445954 2006-04-12 22:19:00 Hi, welcome to the forum......

When you said installs okay 1st time with windows driver and no conflick, does this mean you see no 'yellow sign on the device in windows device manager?.

Are you using an old dialup shortcut? (this may be pointing to the old modem).

You could try another slot on the mobo too if the above doesnt solve.

Damn that was a fast reply!! Cheers.

Correct no yellow sign in windows device manager.

No have created a new dialup shortcut with correct modem and still have this issue.

An important point I forgot to make in the first post was I have tried another modem and am getting the same error leading me to think it is a computer issue over a modem issue.

Hi Trevor,
I havent tried another PCI slot but the 2nd modem I tried was in a ISA slot.

445959 2006-04-12 22:48:00 Modem is Rockwell brand. Dont have the computer with me at the moment so cant get to the model info sorry. Running on Win98 razza (10197)
445960 2006-04-13 00:15:00 Win98, is plug n play enabled in the BIOS? U have ISA slot on the board?, wow, that is an old machine.

Win98 is fun to build with, what other devices are attached to mobo?
Old board may have faulty PCI slot. Sometimes easier to use an external modem connected via serial or USB.
2nd modem? in ISA slot, thats not plug and play and need manual IRQ input before you will get that working.

445961 2006-04-13 00:45:00 Remove all drivers.
Reboot Windows. It should come with a New Hardware Found box and then want to do the driver.
Point it to the CD - make sure you are using the correct sub-directory ion the CD - it should have a bunch of drivers for Win95, 96, ME, 2000 etc etc. Point it to Win98.
If Windows rushed ahead and doesn't allow you to, then go into Control Panel, Hardware Devices and update the driver by pointing it to the correct location on the CD.

Plug & play definately working as it picked the modem up on install.

I didnt realise ISA was not p&p capable. I will try putting the modem into another PCI slot and report back. Will be a few days away though as just about to leave for Hanmer Springs.

Cheers guys,
