I have an Acer laptop that had a faulty CD-ROM. I replaced it and it works just fine except for when you want to boot from it. I tried modifying the BIOS so it loaded the CD-ROM first, but still no luck. I am wondering if the bios may need updating, as this drive also reads dvd's.

The problem with updating the BIOS is that if it goes wrong, the laptop becomes a doorstop. And unfortunately it's not a rare occurrence.

forget the bios - what disk are you trying to boot with - is it a recovery, is it xp, linux? otherwise it won't boot.

No... I have tried booting with bootable cd's. For example Windows XP, Linux boot discs.. rescue discs..none of them will boot, however the drive works once it gets to windows....
