446083 2006-04-13 23:24:00 Trying to upgrade an older laptop to XP however it reaches 51 minutes to completion and crashes everytime.

We are using an authentic XP pro CD, and the hardware is more than enough to run XP.

I was wondering if DOS booting and formating the laptop would be the way to go? The only concern is that we do not have any drivers if we format it.

Thoughts?

446084 2006-04-13 23:32:00 Have you got the original CD(s) that came with the laptop? (if any)

I have had the same problem with repairing windows and a reformat fixed it, if you insert the XP CD and restart the laptop (makes sure it is set to boot from CD) it should come up with an install windows screen, can you get to this stage?

it would help if you told us the exact specs - it's possible it may not be good enough

You sure about that? If it had 98 on it then I doubt it is more than enough. barely enough is more likely in which case it will run like a crippled pig.

Also you'll need to completely format it and do a new install. Make sure you have all the drivers first too.

446087 2006-04-14 02:15:00 I dont have any of the original CDs / Drivers which is why i am hesitant to format.

It boots the install CD, gets through a couple of steps and crashes when preparing to install.

Im not %100 sure of the specs, but i've got XP running on an old PII with 64MB ram before and this laptop is > than that one. :D

Sounds like I will just have to bite the bullet and format.

446088 2006-04-14 03:08:00 If you do bite the bullet and format Im guessing xp will have the microsoft drivers for HOPEFULLY all your hardware on that laptop, if not its usally just a quick internet visit to the manufacturer site to get the updated drivers for xp.
If you are sucessfull in doing this It will be a slow laptop I hope you enjoy coffee :D
