446818 2006-04-17 00:22:00 Hi. Outlook is listed as default email and I want Outlook Express back! "Send To" etc or any other 3rd party links to email always defaults to Outlook. What do I do to correct? running Win98 SE and OE 5.5
I recently re-installed Office 97 to fix a corruption in Word but this problem arose.
I found the following thread on Press F1 and followed instructions, but registry did not recognise the file type (must be for XP?).

Can anyone assist?

446819 2006-04-17 00:38:00 If you want to always use Outlook Express, then go into the program, go Tools > Options and under Default Messaging Programs, click 'Make Default' beside 'This application is the default mail handler'. yzhu (9783)
446820 2006-04-17 00:39:00 Hi Noel. I've virtually forgotten 5.5. However, in later versions, simply open Outlook Express directly and it will show a small dialogue box stating that it is not longer your default. It will ask if you want to make it the default. Yes. Scouse (83)
446821 2006-04-17 00:58:00 Thank you. Tried that, but the "Send To" from Word (and the emailing device in Picasa) still insists on trying to use Outlook and looks for a profile. Any other ideas? noel251 (5640)

446823 2006-04-17 02:32:00 When I reinstalled Office 97, I did a custom install - Don't tick the Outlook Box. Could be worth a try if all else fails. Peter H (220)
446824 2006-04-17 09:32:00 Thank you for the suggestions so far, but nothing appears to work. Peter, I tried the re-install of Office 97 with Outlook turned off, but it is still insisting on being the mail programme. Even after uninstalling Outlook it still turns up. A bit frustrating really. Do I need to completely uninstall Office and re-install, as I have just been doing a straight re-install over the top of existing?
Second question. Would re-installing Outlook Express help? Last programme installed seems to take the default.

446825 2006-04-17 10:24:00 Yes, a full uninstall of Office 97 is required, then a Custom install thereafter. Thats been my fix for hassles like this in the past. Google remove Outlook as well.

Cheers..............John

446826 2006-04-17 10:39:00 Thanks for the help. I have succeeded by upgrading to OE 6 (from 5.5) and I can now send directly from Word and Picasa. I wasn't looking forward to an Office 97 uninstall John. Thanks to all. ............ Noel noel251 (5640)
446827 2006-04-19 09:12:00 I have noticed that my program [XP] always defaults back to MS Outlook for all email after downloading or updating any fixes with Windows or Office.
Each time I have to go into tools/options etc. in Internet Explorer and change the email preference back to Outlook Express.
