447827 2006-04-20 01:33:00 I have a failing 120gb seagate hdd, it wont boot to windows on it because some of the files are corrupt, does anyone have anny suggestions on how to recover the data on it? i have a workstation with an 80gig hdd and im thinking of putting the 120gig in as a slave and trying to find what i can on it (most important stuff is book work, and then pictures). if that doesnt work maybe use some sort of disc recover software? i'm doing this for a friend and will grab the important data and burn it to cd for them.
does anyone have any suggestions on what recovery software i could use? preferably free but shareware is fine.
thanks

oh and the file system im pretty sure is NTFS because it was running winxp

447828 2006-04-20 01:49:00 Since you don't say, I assume that it's a Windows XP system, with NTFS file system .

If it's just damaged Windows system files stopping the boot, you might be able to do a repair of the system .

However, if it's definitely a failing drive (messages from the SMART system?) rather than just corruption, that would be not a good idea .

You should be able to plug it in as a slave drive on the other system . If the directories are OK you are very lucky and will be able to copy files . ;)

However . :D If the Windows system complains about the file system, and wants to do a checkdisk, DON'T LET IT . Do not do anything which will cause writing to the disk . Any writing to it could cause you to lose more data; or all of it .

Before doing anything else, using a Linux "live CD" version, which boots from the CD and runs in RAM, to look at the disk while it's still in its own machine would probably be a good idea . You might have to explicitly mount it ("ro" -- read-only!) if it's a NTFS disk .

447829 2006-04-20 01:50:00 Well there is:

1) Spinrite - faily big $$$ though grc . com
2) Knoppix works for me (or other such Linux distros such as Insert CD) .
3) As a slave option - the problem here is that Windows really doesn't like dealing with failing drives, I find Linux is more forgiving . Use something like GetDataBack for NTFS .

Have a wee search in PressF1 for "recovery" - it has been covered many times before .

Otherwise I'm sure people will post their favourites . . .

447831 2006-04-20 02:10:00 i just tried the slave option, it tried to do scandisk but i cancelled. i went into the drive and i went into program files and it was fine, when back to the root dir and saw a folder that i needed to copy, as soon as i right clicked on it the explorer locked up and i had to restart, now when the drive is connected it wont boot windows (on my workstation) so i have to disconnect the drive. it wont even boot to safe mode while the drive is connected as a slave.
hmm so where can i get one of these bootable linux cd's ?

447832 2006-04-20 02:24:00 Dick Smith (www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4446e24c0fa3cc1e273fc0a87f990718/Product/View/XC4043) have them for $4.95 at quite a few of their shops.

447833 2006-04-20 02:32:00 Did the hard drive make any unusual noises when you clicked on the folder?

If it's really valuable, you might consider using Norton Ghost's forensics image copy, or Acronis TrueImage, before you attempt to recover anything, as insurance.

www.acronis.com

There are professional companies in NZ with clean room facilities which will attempt recover your information, if all else fails. $$$

As gibler mentions, search F1.

447834 2006-04-20 22:47:00 nah the harddrive didnt make any unusual noises, i might try n get hold of a copy of Norton Ghost's forensics then.. and a linux cd Jimmy D (2061)
447835 2006-04-20 23:08:00 Hi, I would try DriveImage XML a try, Norton Ghost is not free, but this is . Anyway give it a go, as it's free, it must be worth a look . Failing that, if you can get a hold of Hiren's Boot CD, it has more tools than you can shake a stick at . It has lots of backup and recovery tools on it . It is also free .

Anyway here is the link to the other free one . . runtime . org/dixml . htm" target="_blank">www . runtime . org

Good luck

447836 2006-04-21 01:08:00 thanks guys,
i'll find the time to try all of your suggestions, in the mean time i've tried ghosting - i have a copy of norton ghost 2002, it wont let me ghost it onto another hdd because it comes up with a 'read sector failure' error
is this hard drive completely gone?
