447802 2006-04-20 00:55:00 I've got an iBook G4 running Mac OS X Tiger from work which I've been using for a week now. When I got it the startup process ran as quick as expected and I had no issues at all. However, over the past 2 or 3 days it's been starting up so slow that it's unbelievable (and that's before I even login as a user). The part at which the window says 'Welcome to Mac OS X' and then displays a bar showing startup progress is where things really come to a virtual halt.

I've tried doing heaps of stuff but it's still as slow as ever. Can anyone help me out with this? :help:

447803 2006-04-20 01:30:00 From this link - Font caches seems to be a cause of this problem

www.macworld.com

There are a number of things that can slow down startup under OS X. I would try these things to see if they help:

Disable auto-mounting of networked volumes (Go --> Connect To Server --> delete all servers listed.)

If your hard drive is, or has been, around 80% full, clear off some disk space and defragment the drive.n (Yes, even if you are running OS X 10.3, which has some rudimentary defragmentation routines built-in.)

Run Repair Disk Permissions. (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility)

Clear your font caches with with Font Finagler

Run the other routine maintenance listed at:
www.macattorney.com
especially clearing the other caches and running the built-in maintenance scripts.

I hope this helps.

Try running memtest86 for os x too.

Run up the Console app (under Applications -> Utilities) and see what the logs are saying.

Some iBooks were know to have bad logic (motherboards) boards.

Also it is pretty painless just to do a reinstall of Tiger ( there is an option Archive and install, that means your apps and home folders are unaffected).
Then reapply the latest software updates.

Also synching to iMac can cause issues.

Try verbose startup mode too (hold down the Apple and V key when OS X boots).

447805 2006-04-20 02:22:00 Yes I do know someone who has a copy of Diskwarrior . However it'll probably be a while before I meet him again .

I ran font finagler along with Yasu but they didn't seem to help at all unfortunately .

Verbose startup only seems to last up until the 'Starting Mac OS X . . . ' window comes up at which point it switches back to the GUI (and in my case after doing so froze) . Annoying thing is the slowdown occurs at that 'Starting Mac OS X . . ' window .

Would wireless networking connections be making any difference?

447806 2006-04-20 02:36:00 Any networking things which aren't present can cause delays . (e . g . if it's looking for NFS directories, or other shared things which are on a server at work) .

But if the speed was initially OK, that's probably not happening here . ;)

I don't know Mac OS X, but there's probably a key combination which will get back the text screen with all the verbose booting up log information .

Otherwise, what about looking at the boot log: open a console terminal and dmesg?

447807 2006-04-20 11:03:00 Hmm I've tried basically everything but it seems verbose mode kicks out straight after aqua's started up (which is when my problems begin too). I can understand this behaviour as I've seen it on Linux distros too.

I've been looking in console but to be honest I'm not too sure which log to look at. Any ideas on that?

The dmesg command doesn't seem to contain any info on what might be screwing up either.

447808 2006-04-20 11:45:00 Have you tried reinstalling Mac OS X? That would probably be the easiest way to solve your problem and it wouldn't take all that long. How old is this iBook? maccrazy (6741)
447809 2006-04-21 01:27:00 The iBook is very new. My work purchased it at the start of this year and started using it in the beginning of November.

I'd definitely reinstall Tiger if I could but I don't currently have the discs with me and when I get them I probably won't have the laptop anymore either so I was hoping there might be some kind of other solution available. The thing just seems to get worse each time it boots.
