2006-04-19 09:01:00 | Hi I have upgraded to a laptop about 2 months ago . It is a Nec with 500 ram . I brought a external dvd writer as it only came with a cdrom . Today when I tried copying some photos onto a brand new Sony dvd-rw disc it at first said the disc was full . Then nothing . So I took the disc out went back into my computer as I was going to check the disc but my dvd was not there . I looked everywhere but It had somehow uninstalled itself . I restarted my computer and that didn't change anything . I tried everything but nothing workerd . So I done a system restore for the 2nd april as I knew it was ok then . When I turned it back on it was the same so, I went and unpluged the dvd and replugged it in and it came back . I thought good . Not good . It will now play cds but not dvds . I put a dvd in that I had played when I got it and it will not even start . I went control panel-systems-hardware-device manager-dvdcd drives-clicked on the dvd and went trouble shoot but it said it was working poperly Is it the dvd drive or something else does anyone else know . I would appriciate any ideas . :help:

2006-04-19 13:00:00 | Can you try the external drive on another PC? It sounds to me as though it might just be a dud drive. I've got a few a work that are showing similar wierd behaviour e.g. they might be able to read silver CDs but not CD-Rs, or seem okay with CDs but read only some DVDs. I've tried to clean the lens but I that didn't help. Bring fairly mechanical beasts they can just go bad. I'd probably wouldn't waste much time on it, and take it back.

2006-04-19 22:14:00 | So, are you trying to burn a cd, or a dvd, using XP's CD writing wizard?? XP doesnt support burning to DVD, by default . Only CD . If you want to burn to DVD, I would use something like Nero/Nerovision (http://www . . nero . com) (altho the burning to DVD bit, needs a serial) . Or CDBurnerXP Pro (http://www . cdburnerxp . se/) , which is free . But, I've never tried this program . What version of Nero, are you using? And how / what option did you select in Nero (or Nerovision), to burn the photos? You didnt format the dvd or cd, before you tried to burn to it, using Nero, did you??

2006-04-19 22:43:00 | I am using Nero 6 that came with the dvd . XP doesnt support burning to DVD, by default . Only CD Thankyou I did not know this (altho the burning to DVD bit, needs a serial) . What is a serial My sister is on her way here to try and see if she can help as she is more computer savy than me . I will get her to read this and get her to ask any questions that I have not thought of .

2006-04-19 22:54:00 | (altho the burning to DVD bit, needs a serial). What is a serial A serial is a serial number, which is needed to enable the option, or to register a software program. Nero usually needs a serial number, so it goes further than the 30 days, or whatever. (If its a trial version). I think in your case, it would have come with a serial, since your version maybe an OEM version. It came with the DVD writer. And most of the options in Nero/Nerovision (well mostly Nerovision), also need a serial number. Whats the brand/model of the dvd writer?? And whats the exact version of Nero? 6.3?? 6.4? 6.5.xx? It could be the version of Nero thats the prob, and it may not recognise the external dvd writer properly.

2006-04-19 23:21:00 | I am using Nero 6 that came with the dvd . use the Nero InfoTool . Located in START -> PROGRAMS -> NERO -> NERO TOOLKIT If it is able to pick up your external DVD drive, you will see information regarding its capabilities under the DRIVE tab on top . This will tell you what sort of discs the drive can write to . (MAke sure the external drive is selected using the drop down menu on the very top, it will show you drive letters) Put in a DVD-R that you know is blank and click on the DISC tab on top . If it is able to provide the correct details for it then I would suggest that you update your Nero 6 . I have a Asus laptop with built-in DVD-RW and it came with NERO 6 OEM as default application . MY WIndows XP had a real issue with it where it would not burn DVD's at all . I had to goto nero . com and download all updates available for nero 6 (i think there are 4 packages) . The first major update fixed my problem . IF the disc is not recongnised under the DISC tab, then either your DVD drive is faulty or DVD media you are using is not supported by that drive . I would suggest you try updating NEro first or better yet use an alternative DVD burning software from the internet . Hope this helps . :)
