447571 2006-04-19 08:20:00 With uni restarting for the year, i moved into a flat at the start of the year. All keen PC users we all chipped in for a 2mbit plan from Slingshot. Some other mates also chose a 2mbit plan from Ihug. Both flat have experienced poor download speeds (HTTP, FTP, Torrents) that doesnt seem to be caused by shaping. Both flats have also experienced connection stability that doesnt seem to be caused by the router, weve tryed different routers, even pulled them apart and improved airflow. We've had tech support from Slingshot and Ihug on speed dail for the last month and the problem seems to be slowly getting better, so we wrote the problem off to a crap exchange or something.

But ive recently come home for easter only to find our 256k plan with Xtra has been upgraded to 3.tmbit and seems to be experiencing the same problems. One of the above mentioned flats had 256k last year without any problems so it does seem the problem is to do with higher speed plans.

Is anybody else experiencing problems like this? Is it simply that telecoms network is ****house and cant handle the higher speeds?

447572 2006-04-19 08:48:00 Yes heaps of people, since the speed increases. Theres been other threads here, gameplanets forum, aardvarks forum, TMs forun, NZDSLs forum, all over the place so I'm not going into it again. You can search for them.... pctek (84)

Nope, I have been getting 300KB/s (so I am on the 3 . 5M plan (with Xtra), on a big download I did a few days ago, & the speed test ( The 500KB Download Test ) I have just done (@ 8:08 pm / 8:10 pm) gave me this result:

Your line speed is approximately 1980 Kbps or 242 . 7 K bytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )
Results
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:
Download time: 2 . 143 seconds
Size of file: 520 Kilobytes
Estimated line speed: 1980 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 242 . 7 (kilobytes/second)

The 1MB speed test gave me:

Your line speed is approximately 2722 . 7 Kbps or 333 . 7 K bytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )
Results
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:
Download time: 3 . 024 seconds
Size of file: 1009 Kilobytes
Estimated line speed: 2722 . 7 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 333 . 7 (kilobytes/second)

I am happy with this :)

Hope this helps :)

447574 2006-04-19 09:23:00 Yes indeed, I've been noticing really shocking speeds over the last 2 weeks or so . Since my "upgrade" to 3 . 5Mb/s I can only really say that the speed was decent for the 1st week or so . The last 2 weeks have been terrible .

This evening I downloaded a 8 . 76KB file and I was only getting 8 . 3KB/s, the file took nearly 3 and a half minutes to download?!?!?!? :yuck:

Is that crap speed or am I been too HARSH ON TELECOM!!!

Their contention ratios must be like 200 users per connection or whatever it is .

Still I guess it's better than dial-up but that by no means suggests we are getting a quality service from them .

In the mean time I guess the whole of NZ will slowly revert back to an Internet Palaeolithic Period, until we can thaw Telecom's heart or actually get them one (whichever comes 1st . . . geezz we'll be waiting a while  )

Cheers

447575 2006-04-19 09:32:00 Still on 256K at Slingshot, but over the last few weeks been experiencing periodic service disconnections, anything from 5 minutes to 1 hour .

It's not ADSL router related, rebooting it does not resolve the connection . It seemingly loses it's lease on the DHCP IP allocated, and the DHCP server fails to return a new IP on connection . The connection to the DHCP server seems to be OK though .

Anone else with the same experience?

Is that crap speed or am I been too HARSH ON TELECOM!!!Remember that slows speeds aren't just Telecom's fault . If the server you are accessing is oversold or on a slow connection then that will be the main factor behind your slow download speeds (trust me, there are people who actually buy from the $5 per month for almost infinite resources type of host) .

I've never had any problems maintaining a connection with the exchange . In that respect Jetstream is very good . As far as speeds go, when I was on 2MBit I could get 2MBit most of the time . However with the new 3 . 5MBit connection speed it tends to fluctuate between 1 . 6MBit and 3 . 3MBit depending on the time of the day . It's usually about 1 . 9MBit so I wouldn't bother complaining about it provided it doesn't get any worse .

Had you checked out phone jacks?. I remember on dial up with Xtra some time back the jacks needed replacing in my very old rental house. Even this house I live in needed some wiring cut out even though we never had a phone in it.

I'm with Orcon and changed to a 2 Mbit plan. This works here.

447578 2006-04-19 18:59:00 Some interesting problems.I thought I was the only one with problems.
I am having no problem with speed. But I am still getting dropped from the system on occasions.
I am connecting at over 3000 Kbps. and downloads are in the mainwell over 150.
I installed a new Billion ethernet modem last week and thought problems were over.
Yesterday I was dropped at about 8am and could not get back on for over an hour.
What has me bemused. All the time my modem lights signified it was connected. "network Connections" said it was connected. But all I could get was the usual run of "unable to connect" messages.
Then it came back on and no further problems.
One funny thing. My taskbar ikon says "speed 100 Mbps" before yesterday's outage it used to say"speed 400Mbps". But there has been no change in download speed. "NZ Broadband" speed checks are all over 3000.
So carrying on with fingers crossed.

447579 2006-04-19 20:36:00 The modem LEDs tell you Jack, that the modem is connected to an ADSL enabled line. However that does not indicate you are logged onto to your ISP.

When you lose connection, try going into your modem setup from the browser, and somewhere there will be a Status page or something similar which tells you your IP address, and there should also be a connect button. If your IP address reads 0.0.0.0 you can try operating the connect button and see if you get reconnected more quickly than just waiting for it to come up on its own.

Well, at least it is something to do and vent ones annoyance on :)

Which would depend on when/where you download from.
Mine however after being a nice 2Mbps (with minor variations depending on servers) has gone down to between 200kps and 900kpbs after I was "upgraded" to 3.5Mbps.
Telecom have acknowledged that it is a problem, not at my end, its consistently crap, regardless where/what I am doing on the net.
Like now, viewing posts, my pages are loading!!! Haven't had a pge like this LOAD for ages!
This mornings speed test results confirm its still rubbish.
