447473 2006-04-19 02:45:00 Just noticed in Ascents catalogue that there is very little difference in price between an AMD64 4000+ and an Amd 64 +2 4200+.

What's wrong with the dual processor models? Not as good as they were supposed to be?

Not sure yet but I will be changing from an AMD Athlon 3200+ with 1 gig RAM to a AMD X2 4400+ with 4 Gig RAM. Added to that there is a change of Video card from a winfast 5700 to a far better one. I probably would not notice the difference between the two CPUs you mention above though if that was the only hardware changed. Was thinking about an FX57 or 60 and a 4800 X2 but have settled for a 4400 as it is in my opinion more bang for the buck as it were.

I will be changing from WinXP Pro to WinXP Pro 64 bit as well.

Eventually Vista will arrive too. I will be ready hardware wise.

It all rather depends on software taking advantage of dual etc, but I expect that eventually Microsoft will produce a new version of FlightSim which will take advantage.

447476 2006-04-19 10:40:00 The dual core cpu's are certainly as good as they were supposed to be, But a single core cpu will still give you better gaming performance.

As already noted its the software that is lagging behind the hardware, Though even considering Vista will make better use of 64-bit and dual core cpu's I wouldn't be in any way surprised if the 90 billion ton of bloat negates any performance increase.

Anyhow, I don't usually say this but the next generation of dual-core cpu's will be the ones to look at buying....when they are released, Especially the Intel which by all accounts is laying waste to everything on the market.

Could Metla be making the change from AMD to intel

I agree with this. Wait for Socket AM2.

AM2 is a dead duck....DDR2 is NOT an improvement per se of 939 DDR

I cant believe I am saying this.....but Intel may have a last go it right with Conroe.

Regardless of whether DDR2 is good or not, AM2 is the next socket.

447481 2006-04-20 04:00:00 Dual Core CPU's? They rocks but cost quite a lot, seriously lots of money. To improve gaming power use dual core CPU and set it to auto clock to increase CPU power. It won't lag much but make sure you have a fuse to cut the power off when it gets too hot. Motherboard usually have high temperature power cut. MTLance (6768)
447482 2006-04-20 04:02:00 Tom's Hardware had a good metric regarding the AMD family. It's from 2005, but still mostly relevent
