447205 2006-04-18 10:59:00 I screwed up !!

One minute I was in Microsoft Windows Network on my daughters computer I could see the our Home network icon (and her school network icon) and when I clicked on it I could see our Officecomputer and Dadlaptop (mine) - we connect over a wireless network.

Clicking on Officecomputer I could access the sharedocs folder and drag and drop files onto her laptop. .....

Then I ran System Mechanic and doh the home network is gone. System Restore did not bring it back and so Dad has done it again :(

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

447206 2006-04-18 22:43:00 I guess you're referring to Iolo technologies' System Mechanic .

Not what you want to hear, but once things go seriously awry, I try to recover from a backup, and if that doesn't work I rebuild it from scratch .

I usually rebuild my systems from scratch every six months anyhow, as a regular house keeping chore .

Some might say: "how about using non-Microsoft software to attempt repairs, if the restore fails . " I'm always uneasy about using non-Microsoft software to fix Windows .

Of course, this excludes hardware, such as drivers .

My list of trusted applications is pretty short . Iolo not on that list, but that may be because I never found a need to use it .

447207 2006-04-18 22:57:00 You should be able to restore the home network without a "system rebuild". This is not what I would call a "seriously awry" situation.

My first action would be to reinstall the wireless network adaptor. I have to do that reasonably often on my laptops. The USB WiFi adapters I have just disappear from time to time. Look in the Control Panel -- Install/Remove Programmes and click on the adapter line. It should give you an option to repair the installation.
