447157 2006-04-18 02:09:00 ok i have a xTRA BROADband single PC modem for my HOME computer. My sister has a WORK laptop that she'd like to bring home to check her emails with and she wants to use the fast broadband connection. her laptop has windows XP and she uses Lotus notes for email.)

Would i have to make a new WINDOWS XP user(hopefully the new user will have lotus notes by default?) then Would i just plug the usb broadband modem into her laptop and install it like i did i our HOME pc using the xtra setup CD, then just use the same username and password? And tell her when she's at home use the NEW windows xp user to check her lotus notes email and when she's at work to use her Work windows xp USER? What type of windows xp USER will i have to make? admin user? And it won't interfere with HER works internet connection will it? Cuz u configure the USB modem in Internet explorer so I don't know her WORKS internet explorer to use the HOME internet connection settings.

447158 2006-04-18 03:01:00 Can't see why you'd need a new user, just plug the modem into the laptop and set it up the same way you set up your desktop. Unless you install a switch, only one computer will be accessing the net at any given time.

Don't try to make it any more complicated than it need be.

447159 2006-04-18 03:07:00 well unless you have a thompson/alcatel speetouch 330, (the much older modem issued by xtra which looks like a trilobyte) then you'll have a d-link dsl 302g or dsl 502t .......both of the d-link modems haev both ethernet and usb connections on them and you can actually run two pc's at the same time on one of thoes modems and share the connection without fuss........assuming that lappy has ethernet all you need to do is plug the modem in and it'll be connected...... drcspy (146)
447160 2006-04-18 03:12:00 yeah but what happens when my Sister takes her LAPTOP back to work and opens internet explorer???????? The pages won't load cuz the broadband modem will be at home. There is no connection for xtra broadband. xtra told me to set it up via Internet explorer by typing in the modem's IP address.

Or can u go into Dial up network and make an XTRA connection? Where would i get all the ip settings etc from then?

447161 2006-04-18 03:15:00 ther is litte or no changes required to sis's lappy,............just plug the modem into the ethernet port on the pc...then goto control panel in the lappy then internet options/connections......and set it to 'dial whenever a network connection is not present'.......then you should be able to access the net thru your modem at home and her dialup at work (assuming that's what she uses) drcspy (146)
447162 2006-04-18 03:16:00 using ethernet there is NO 'connection' required to be 'made' in the COMPUTER for the modem........the modem itself holds all the connection details..... drcspy (146)
447163 2006-04-18 03:49:00 i do not want to use ethernet. i don't think her lappy has an ethernet port also. It has this virtual network base that she plugs her lappy into using the parallel port. so How would i make it so i can just plug the USB modem using the USB port into her lappy and make it work? lance4k (4644)
447164 2006-04-18 04:22:00 You don't need the extra user thing.
When she is at home, she can use the broadband connection. When she's back at work she can switch to using whatever she uses there. You can create a new HARDWARE PROFILE, so that when she switches back and forth it will siwtch over.

447165 2006-04-18 06:25:00 Just please be careful though, as most larger companies have (often severe) restrictions on computer connection to anything other than the "company network".

This is because they have no control over what firewall etc is available in any network they do not administer, and connecting to your broadband modem is just "another network". If the level of security was low, the laptop could get infected and that would then immediately compromise the company network when she reconnects.

Just as a precaution make sure the company is OK with it first. Most I know of would not be.

447166 2006-04-18 10:41:00 Exactly right GF, i certainly wouldnt allow any of my office laptop onto any other network without a firewall.

OP, if ur sister uses the laptop at work, it will be connected via the ethernet port, she may have a docking station at work also to ease the plugging in of cables, keyboard, printer, mouse, monitor etc, however it will still, if less than 3 yrs old, still have its own ethernet port, which will get an ip address from a network such as your modem. Unless the laptop at work uses a proxy server, all you have to do is plug the ethernet cable from the modem into the laptop. Too easy.
