447591 2006-04-21 02:24:00 Generally this type of disconnection is not caused by congestion, they are caused by line interferences and noises.

I have contacted telecom about your problem, telecom could not see any faults but they did say that your line seem to have strong noise, maybe due to far distance to the exchange.

Yeah sounds like a line problem to me too.
Either it will be in your property or outside of it.
As Telecom have detected noise I'd ringthem directly and skip Ihug.
Of course, if it is inside your gate you get charged, but it may not be.

447592 2006-04-21 06:51:00 I'm still officially on the "Swift" plan with Xtra. Prior to April I would get steady 1.8Mbps on my line and I'm about 5.3km from my exchange.
In the past 2 weeks though I have intermittent speed drops the worst of which was 248kpbs. I have no complete outages though.
First thing in morning I get steady 1.8 ~1.9 then by lunchtime it dropped to 712kpbs at some time late afternoon it jumps to 1.8Mpbs again. Mid evening it'll crawl again then at about 22:00 it's back up.
I can understand a slow down during heavy usage but such big variations can be frustrating.
Xtra tells me my line tests OK and the exchange is fine.
I'll stick with Xtra for now so as to avoid having to deal with an intermediary 'supplier'...

447593 2006-04-28 11:26:00 I too have dropped in speed since being "upgraded" . I was on a 1mb connection and getting often just over that bust mostly around the 956 kpbs mark . Now I've been bumped up to a 2mb plan Im lucky if I see what I was no before!! , mostly between 400 kpbs-800 kpbs max now .

Is there anything I can do about it??

Cheers

I'll let you know . Telecom is supposed to contact me around the 5th to discuss what, if anything, will be done for my speed problem .

447595 2006-04-29 12:09:00 I had an interesting occurance here.
Before the upgrade UI was running at about 2.2M to telecom/xtra but after the change over it fell to just under 2M.
Last week I managed to kill my adsl modem (physically) and got a new XH1169 from DSE.
I immediately connected at 3.2M. The previous one had been a XH1149- was it compatible with the new speed splits?

447596 2006-04-30 03:19:00 I contacted my ISP today & reported the issue, they acknowledged there are problems & asked for me to do screen shots over a few days & then e-mail it to them. They are hoping to have it sorted in a week or so and are climbing all over Telecom to sort it. Im sweet for browsing but downloading is pretty slow.

Cheers

447597 2006-04-30 07:33:00 Ok all today at around 4 . 30pm i had had enough of what is supposed to be new and faster broadband as per quoted by xtra (Telecom) .

So away i go and ring their number where i am greeted with a nice voice recorded lady saying if you are calling about broadband problems there will be a wait , then phone rings through to another voice recorded message by a nice young fellow saying the same thing and that you may experience up to 30mins delay on yoiur call being answered .

Ok so i listen to their boaring music ( will they ever change that) and after a nice wait of 25mins i am greated with a nice young lady who i quote my case number to and ask where we are at with it as i have been left in the dark in the last 2 weeks about an update on it . Her response is please hold while i go and find out what is happening, approx 5 mins later she is back on the line saying she is very sorry and the matter is in the hands of the tech team and that it may take up to 2 months to resolve . So ok i say if it is going to take 2 months to resolve then do you not think that i should be getting a discount on the lesser speeds i am now achieving since you's changed my plan . Her response is that she will go talk to her team leader and see what sort of credit can be offered . 5 mins later she is back on the line and is telling me that she is sorry but no credits can be offered until the matter is resolved . I thanked her for her time and that was the end of that .

So where to from here , Well first off i want to say thanks to the helpdesk staff who i have been ringing over the past 4 weeks about this problem , they have always been as helpfull as they can and i know there is nothing that they can do themselves and i am sure they are getting just as pi**ed off with the amount of people ringing in with the same problem as me .

So what is telecom doing about this , well according to me nothing , naada , zilch , since i have reported my problem i have recieved one email from them saying they can put no time frame on fixing the problem . No updates on what is happening , nothing at all so all in all i am left out in the dark . From the poll on the front of this site 66% of people are having the same problem by the looks of it , Are telecom releasing anything to the media or its users saying they know they are having problems, no they are not they are releasing nothing yet keep bombarding us with ads on t . v saying new broadband speeds are here , Are they well i am yet to see it , hell i would be happy to get my constant 2 meg speed back .

So what i am i going to do about it , Well i thought about this for awhile and i thought do i have a case with the commerce commision , or the consumer advocates , Hell yes i think i do , I realise that speeds vary in any internet connection and i am more than happy to accept that but when my speed is only achieving around 25% of what is advertised i think that is a breach of their contract .

But i need the data to back this up if i am going to take this further , so what i have done is set up an app called webwatcherbot 3 . 0 , this is an app which is normally used to monitor your site for uptime , but i am going to use it a little differently , i have set it up to grab the page . jetstreamgames . co . nz/speed/500KB . html" target="_blank">www . jetstreamgames . co . nz
This page if you take out the pics text ect is 520 kbytes of data , so what webwatcher bot is set up to do is get this page every 1 hour and record the time it takes to do so, Its just a pity that it does not record the final connection speed but i can work that out later and put that into the results .
I am going to let this run day after day for at least 2 weeks then armed with this data present it to as many public people as i can , hell if telecom are going to do nothing about it then maybe the pressure of the public can .

Anyway thats what this one person is doing about it , i am publishing the results as they get recorded on my site which you are more then happy to look at when ever you like . I am going to update the results at around 6 . 00pm every night when at all possible . you can view the results here .

. tls-tech . com/xtra/index . html" target="_blank">www . tls-tech . com

Note : this is not to discredit telecom in anyway it is informative results from problems i am experiencing .

447598 2006-04-30 08:09:00 I'm still on the 2 meg plan (from NZDSL: Download Speed: 1931 kbps (241.4 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 179 kbps (22.4 KB/sec transfer rate).

It looks like I shouldn't be concerned about upgrading to 3.5 as things could get worse based on the above problems....

447599 2006-04-30 10:12:00 Over the last week I have been doing speed tests at different times of the day. Overall, the average ended up being 2MBit, with speeds much faster in the morning and much slower in the evening. So really, my connection speed on average essentially hasn't changed but is frustratingly slow in the evenings, sometimes less than 1MBit, and nice and quick in the mornings when most people (such as myself) don't use the internet. The price is the same, the speed, on average, is the same but fluctuates much more. I think that Telecom would do themselves a favour by stopping their ads claiming "faster, cheaper broadband" because all it does is deceive those that don't understand broadband and frustrates those that do. :p maccrazy (6741)

imo I would think things would get better?
