help thnx

I do not run System Restore . . . it will also restores viruses and trojans and all sorts of malware . . . not worth the trouble . If you use it, you're just asking the malware to return over and over .

These are my rules that I apply to myself . . . you can follow them if you want . . or iggy me and just do things whatever way you want . . . . . . . . . . . . but, since you are having all the problems you are having, I offer the following advice . . . but it's just my advice . . .

I make sure that I get SP-2 immediately after I install XP . . . . it needs a full foothold in the system and since it is almost a total re-write of XP . . it needs to have full license to make whatever changes to the system it needs . . . so get it early on . . . before your system gets all plugged up with junk and left-over file ends and snips and pieces of leftover installs . . . etc . . . . Tell MIcrosoft that you want the free CD-rom of SP-2 . . they will mail it to you .

Run HJT in SafeMode at least once a week and see what you've corrupted . There are several sites that offer free diagnosis of your scans . . . or you can wait for Speedy . . who I think is one of the sharpest people along with Pancake on this site . They have a really great ability to correct things and tell you what is and isn't good in the HJT scan . . . . . listen to them .

I do not agree with Speedy about you're not needing SP-2 . . . . it is of paramount importance to get it . . sooner than later . If you go on the web . . . you need all the help you can get . . . if you use Windows, you need to become an IT expert . . . sorry, but that's the way it is . . . . . I am not plugging Linux here, as it too seems to be falling into the crosshairs of people who want to do harm to you .

Get ALL the Windows updates . . . with a few exceptions . . . the WMP DRM thing is just a nasty "upgrade" . . . stay away from it .

Get a good firewall . . . AVG Free is NOT a firewall, but ZoneAlarm is . You can only have one software firewall running at a time . . . I use Windows Defender .

If you use DSL, get a router for the physical firewall protection it offers .

Norton's and McAfee (IMNotSoHO) suck big ones . . . they are money wasters if you buy them . . . and even if you get them free from your ISP . . . they are worse because they give you a false sense of security and use a lot or your resourses too .

SpyBot S&D is feared by most hackers and spyware . . . it must be good . . . keep it up to date and use the advanced version . . . immunize constantly and in the TOOLS area, deselect all of the boxes in the "Ignore" area .

SpywareBlaster works . AdAware works . . . get it . MSBA is pretty good too . . . it's a free scan of your system's integrity from M$ . Belarc Adviser should be printed out before you have a melt-down . . . . . save it on paper for when you lose everything . . . not IF . . . but WHEN! CrapCleaner (CCleaner) is a good device to use to get rid of those lost links, dead pointers and bits and pieces of leftover files from installs and removals . I use AVG Free . . . . good price . . great protection too .

Do not use Internet Explorer . . not even the new Beta . . . it is still IE and hacked just for the fun of it . Use Firefox for your browser, and if you can figger it out, use Thunderbird as your POP3 . . . it's in the Mozilla Suite .

So . , . . . . . . . . this is just MY advice . . . . . it ain't the law . . . but I am running free and clean here on DSL at 4Kbits down, 961 . 8Kbytes up for over a year now .

What I should have said, is:

People have had probs/trouble with it, AFTER they've installed it, and especially if they dont check for malware etc BEFORE they install SP2.

As you'll be worse off, (AFTER SP2 has been installed), if u dont check for spyware/malware FIRST.

SP2 fixes a LOT of probs, if u dont have SP1 or 2 installed.

Thanks Speedy . . . .

Somehow I just knew that you mis-spoke yourself . . . as you know that SP-2 is really a good thing .

And, yes, I agree that if there's spyware on the system b4 SP-2 is installed, you're asking for a real mess . . . . . but again that's why I recommend getting SP-2 really, really early on in the install .

Speedy . . . a quick question: is there room to slipstream SP-2 on a full XP-Pro install disc?

Yup XP itself only takes like I think just over 1/2 of a cd . About 375mb or something, or maybe near 400mb . You've still got 300+mb left .

SP2 (about 266mb), can be slipstreamed on a cd with XP . No prob at all .

I've got an XP Pro CD here, with SP2 slipstreamed on it .

SP2 will get installed, as part of an install (If you do a clean install) .

Joe, I am concerned about your view that the Windows Defender is a firewall as I cannot find anywhere on the internet that describes it as anything but an anti-spyware program. Anti-spyware programs do not protect your computer from incoming and regulate outgoing internet traffic like firewalls do.

447721 2006-04-25 02:21:00 Windows XP does have its own firewall but Windows Defender is in no way a firewall.... Pancake (6359)

You guys are both right...Microsoft Defender is not a firewall...but the mistake I made was failing to say that it toggles on the Windows Firewall as a default....

My bad...sorry...

However, I use the Defender and let it turn on Windows Firewall. Maybe I should clarify another statement I made.....Since I use a Linksys router (for the physical firewall), I don't feel TOO afraid with the Windows XP firewall as the software one......

As an aside: has anyone noticed that they have a new entry in the Control Panel called "Software Explorers?" This is from the new Defender too...still waiting to see if I like it or now...but it tells if things I've installed are certified or not for operating with XP.

447723 2006-04-25 04:46:00 But Joe, relying on the Windows firewall and your router for protection is not the best you can do . :(

Check out this page ( . practicallynetworked . com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall . htm" target="_blank">www . practicallynetworked . com) (see Warning #3) and this page ( . zdnet . com . au/insight/security/soa/The_pros_and_cons_of_Windows_Firewall/0,39023764,39252830,00 . htm" target="_blank">www . zdnet . com . au) and I also recommend that you read this thread ( . pressf1 . co . nz/showthread . php?t=60834" target="_blank">www . pressf1 . co . nz) for a really good discussion on firewalls .

If that doesn't convince you nothing will . ;) :D
