447796 2006-04-20 00:32:00 Connect the new one to the old hdd / system as a slave?

Is the hdd that needs replacing still working? Are you using it now?

Only thing is, where's the install of XP?? Is it on a partition on the old hdd?

Or is it on CD?

447797 2006-04-20 04:13:00 Thanks Speedy,
I'm still using the old one, but I'm not confident it will last much longer,it's making very audible noises that don't sound healthy.
There's no partition, and no install cd. The OS was shop installed when I bought the machine a couple of years back.I do have "activdoc" some where on a floppy, if it's relevant.
I could do with a recommendation on which new type of hdd to buy(80+gig would be good), my comp is used for photos and videos nowadays, and a new graphics card is also going in, so any help there would be cool also.

447798 2006-04-20 05:10:00 Hi Capt.Hook, i noticed that you mentioned "Activdoc" (which i presume only comes with Packard Bell systems?), which rang a bell with me, As I had a P.Bell here some months back, which was about 2-3 yrs old and had come preinstalled with xp home, no install cds and apparently no patition... as well as the owners saying they hadn't made any recovery cds. Anyway long story - and some corruption on their computer as well, but, there was in fact a hidden patition, which i was able to make a nice clean set of recovery cds from in the end. In the All Programs Menu, under pc tools??(cant remember exactly as it was some time ago now), was eventually the option to create the recovery cds or restore preinstalled software, which i was then able to do a clean install with. However in your case, even if you were able to create the recovery cds, you need to have all the hardware it was brought with installed unfortuantely, before the clean install from the recovery cds - which would be a problem with a new hdd, graphics card etc... i presume... Just a side note, (if its a PBell) i ended up speaking to a PB tech, who was helpful even though it was well over warranty period - so may be worthwhile phoning them? J ZEP (336)
447799 2006-04-20 05:25:00 just get the new drive, yep 80gb are cheap enuf now...and then slave it and 'image' it using norton ghost, acronis true image, or one of the free manufacturers programs that copy entire harddrive contents.......you'll lose nothing and you'll end up with the entire system on your new drive it'll only take half an hour... drcspy (146)
447800 2006-04-20 20:25:00 J ZEP...yeah, it's a P/Bell machine.Thanks for info,I'll have a look around and see what I can find.

drcspy...when I've got everything on the new drive, can/do I remove the old drive from the machine,or can it be left in the machine, but dormant?

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
