448360 2006-04-22 02:16:00 Can anyone tell me what this error message means. When I am in IE 5.5 it has started crashing and giving this error message. I am on Xtra Broadband and Windows 98 SE.

Microsoft Fatal Exception error 0028:C1683436 inVXD AFVXD(01) + 00004B46

:groan:  :annoyed:

448361 2006-04-22 02:59:00 Wow. Google yielded nothing. Is IE6 available for Windows 98SE users? If this issue persists, I suggest you to make the switch to Firefox; it is much more stable and nicer.

Cheers :)

448363 2006-04-22 03:19:00 Thanks to those who have replied so far.
I am wondering if this could be a Registry problem?

448364 2006-04-22 03:28:00 No, it'll be something else crashing it .

You could try IE 6 SP1 ( . microsoft . com/downloads/details . aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com)

It shouldnt take too long with broadband, depending on what options u select .

Or try Firefox, or Opera .

448365 2006-04-22 03:32:00 Changing the browser wont necessarily cure the problem, that would be a last resort, though it should be updated any way, together with any security updates.

These fatal exception errors can be difficult to pin point. In this case afvxd.vxd is a network driver, I think associated with Dial Up Networking, DUN.

I'd be inclined to go to Control Panel-Network-Configuration, and see if Dial Up Networking adapter is installed. If so uninstall it, as it is not needed with a broadband router. I'm not sure if DUN is needed if you have a USB modem.

Another thing to try is to extract a fresh copy of afvxd.vxd using System File Checker, you will need the win98 CD, or to have the win98 from that CD on your hard drive.

This is what MS say about fatal exception errors, but I've never found it of any use :)

448366 2006-04-22 03:57:00 Stay with it. The simplest answer, as I see it, is to click Msinfo32 in the Sart/Run icon then click tools on Msinfo32's toolbar, then click the first drop down option - "Repair Internet Explorer". Sit back, follow the instructions and wait for repair....

448367 2006-04-22 04:25:00 Hi and thanks to all so far
If I run Internet Explorer repair tool will I lose my Favourites list? or other internet settings?
stt (10259)
448368 2006-04-22 04:26:00 Also to Terry
I have a Dial Up Adapter and a TCP Dial Up Adapter under Control Panel/Network/Configuration.
The problem is only intermittent.
Do you think I need to clean my Registry?
My Microsoft Updates are up to date
I have extensively searched Microsoft Knowledge Base but couldn't find my exact error message.
