448224 2006-04-21 09:49:00 Hi everyone

Just wondering if anyone has run into the weird problem I've been having all day and if there are any solutions.

I am on 1mbit plan with Slingshot and apart from random 20min disconnects once every few days was quite happy with the service they provided. However today I have noticed that all my games ran INCREDIBLY laggy, I'm talking 56k speeds and worse.

I quickly went to www.nzdsl.co.nz in order to run some tests and I was getting 110+ kbps every time.

However It was still very slow to surf internet and download anything.

Trying www.speakeasy.net (which is an american site) - yielded me quite poor results - I am talking below 33k speeds.

Suddenly I realized that my internet was still fast when using any NZ site (ie tradme.co.nz loads almost instantly), while using any overseas site has slowed me down to a CRAWL.

My theory was confirmed when I ran this test http://www.speedtest.co.nz/ which simultaneously tests connection speed in USA and NZ.

Here is a screenshot that illustrates my problem

Anyone ever encounter anything like this?

448225 2006-04-21 10:00:00 same thing happen to me dude. It is really werid using local internet in the country it is always fast no matter what. What software are using to test those speed? I use system mechanic 6 but shows really slow.
Are you using an ADSL Router?
Connecting to overseas internet is so laggy. When I play StarCraft with my two North American friends they said my network connection is so poor causing some serious lag.

448226 2006-04-21 10:01:00 I know that at the moment there are problems getting to international sites. Its been like this for a few days.We are finding some problems here in Oz. Pancake (6359)
448227 2006-04-21 10:10:00 There are currently international traffic outage as reported by iHug, Orcon and Quicksilver. I'd imagine the same is true for Slingshot. The issue is with the international bandwidth supplier of these ISPs which currently is experiencing fibre cut in the US.

For more details:
www.ihug.co.nz
www.orcon.net.nz

Quicksilver doesn't say this on their website but they play a pre-recorded voice message regarding this issue when you call them.

Maybe you can try ring Slingshot to confirm this.

448228 2006-04-21 10:13:00 Apparently the upstream provider of international traffic (i.e. the people on the american side of the southern cross cable) for some ISPs are having problems. Might have be a cut fibre cable. Check the status page of your ISP for more info. joshjnz (7844)

Thank you for the prompt response. I will probably give them a call, but I am 99.9% sure that Slingshot are having exactly the same problem that was described on these websites. It's just a little frustrating to have everything slow down to a crawl, after getting used to loading everything instantly.

448230 2006-04-21 10:33:00 No wonder my internet speed is so dam slow for downloading stuff from international web today. I wonder if there any problems downloading files from Peer to Peer Networking software which is international.
N.Z. internet is not really reliable at all but in Britain it is much cheaper and more reliable and peer to peer networking software can download to up 100kb/sec in Europe.
