| 448023 | 2006-04-20 23:25:00 | I hope this is the right forum for my question . I think I understand the basics of creating a website . I have a very simple HMTL editor and FTP program . I also understand the necessity of having well-organised files . My problem is that my computer (running Windows XP) won't let me save file names with a / (forward slash) in them . Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I wanted to create a webpage with a photograph of my cat and a simple caption, I might organise the files held by my webhost like this: under public_html I would have another folder called pictures, with another folder called animals inside that . In this folder I would put my picture (cat1 . jpg) and maybe also my actual HTML page . This is only an example -- I suppose I could arrange files any way I want . I hope I'm making sense . If accessed via the internet, this page would have an address of www . mywebsite . com/pictures/animals/cat1 . html The trouble is, if I try to create this webpage on my computer, it won't let me save any file with a forward slash in the name! So how on earth can I create organised names for my files? I know I must be missing something but for the life of me I can't see what it is . |

| 448024 | 2006-04-20 23:43:00 | the / denotes a sub directory, more specifically a unix style sub directory, if your using a windows OS then its the otherway round \. So create a directory (or folder), call it mywebsite and within that create a directory called pictures, then animals and so on placing the cat.html within the animals directory. Hopefully this makes some sense. |

Inside your site directory on your computer have an images or pictures folder of the same name as that on your site (eg pictures or images or whatever). When calling an image call it from the same folder name as you do on your site. Lemon squeezy. [edit] when I say call or calling it can also mean fetching. It doesn't mean naming. |

| 448029 | 2006-04-21 21:24:00 | I just re-read your post, www.mywebsite.com/pictures/animals/cat1.html is definitly the wrong way to do it, so I thought I'd just elaborate a bit more. Unless you've already sorted it, it should look like: www.mysite.com/animals.html, or, if you wanted to link directly to the image, it should look like www.mysite.com/images/cat.jpg So inside your public_html directory you place your index page. In there you also place your animals.html page. Inside there you also place your images folder. Inside your images folder is where your cat picture is located. Let us know how you get on. |

| 448030 | 2006-04-22 20:46:00 | Thanks, Greg. I think I'm going to be OK with it. I'll do a little experimenting anyway. The important thing for me is to actually understand the principle of what I'm trying to do....... once I have that, I can nut out the rest. With my hypothetical webpages, what if I had more than one picture in my animals folder, eg. a dog and a cat? Wouldn't the webpage address for one be www.mysite.com/animals/cat.html and the other www.mysite.com/animals/dog.html? I say this because www.mysite.com/animals.html doesn't seem to have enough info if I wanted more than one page showing an animal. |

You don't even need an animals page actually - you can just have all your images linked to from your home (index) page. | Greg (193) | ||
