448312 2006-04-21 23:18:00 Is there an easy way to boot XP and just prevent normal startup programs running? I am almost certain that I once found a useful utility that showed all the various programs that start when you boot XP with a tab representing each different place that startup programs could reside. There was an option on the program to set all startup programs off. Does anyone know what that program might be? nick_ryan (10258)
448313 2006-04-21 23:26:00 There's msconfig (start/run, type msconfig), that will let u tick/untick programs that run on startup. Under the startup tab.

Or use ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) which will do the same thing, but permanently. This also cleans temp files etc off the hdd.

448314 2006-04-22 01:01:00 "Startup Control Panel" is what you are looking for and whilst you are there also get "StartupMonitor", I wouldn't run a Windows computer without them.

Cheers :)

448316 2006-04-22 03:46:00 .....and if you're nervous about playing in the msconfig area, Spybot S&D has a neat way to toggle off or on any start-ups you want. This way you won't kill the process completely like you can if you use HJT.

You must run the advanced version of Spybot to get to the tools area...and then to the system startups. You will be given the option to toggle them or destroy the entry ala' HJT.

448317 2006-04-22 07:10:00 Since you are affaid of enable and disable the startup program. I know the simple solution which is the System Mechanic 6.0s, Managed Windows Startup, and there is a list of program to be enable or disable without interupting the system. This is a very simple way for new computer users.
Another way is using Control Panel Tools which is mention above. The safer was to do it is using Norton GoBack if anything happen to the computer.
Good luck and cheers.

448320 2006-04-24 10:04:00 Thank you all for your assistance. MSCONFIG was the one I was thinking. My Dad just asked how he could do a boot without starting all his regular startups as a one-off. MSCONFIG has options to do that nice and easily.

The other information was also of value to me and I will explore the various methods you have given me.
