| 447892 | 2006-04-20 04:37:00 | Whenever I try to send an email through my orcon freemail account, I get an error saying that the mail client can't connect to the SMTP server. This also happens on my parent's computer using their Orcon account. I can send mail fine through my Gmail account & pop3 & imap work fine. It only started happening since I switched ISP from Orcon to Xnet - is it likely that they have restricted the SMTP servers you are allowed to use? |

Orcon will not let you send through their SMTP server unless you are connected to them. This is normal with all ISP's to avoid open relays. You will neeed to change the SMTP server in your mail program to smtp.xnet.co.nz |

You’re the 2nd person who I have helped with this issue today! :) :D If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2003 Go to: Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts > select your e-mail account > click on change > then another window will pop up click on "more settings" > click on the Outgoing server tab, then tick the box labelled "My Outgoing sever (SMTP) requires authentication” The reason why you cant send mail with out doing this is because Orcon smtp server requires authentication before you can send any mail with there servers. | 447897 | 2006-04-21 02:16:00 | I sent off an email to the Xnet helpdesk & they confirmed that they block access to SMTP servers other than their own. I've set it up to use their SMTP server & everything is working fine now. Its kinda crazy how you can make an email appear to have come from one account when it was sent through a completely different one. | Greven (91) | ||
| 447898 | 2006-04-21 02:42:00 | As Safari mentioned, responsible owners of SMTP servers use "anti-relay" features to prevent spamming. (If only there was a "hit spammers with giant mallet" feature.) When I was responsible for a number of Internet servers, the SMTP server was the most popular in the form of attacks; one set of attacks was from a compromised US Navy server!
