448778 2006-04-23 11:11:00 I've been using Orcon's value dail up at home for a little under a year... but the last 5 months have been a mare.
I thought maybe I had a virus or something on my XP Pro notebook- did the usual stuff.
Even tested my work Apple PowerBook...
Internet access was just impossible to use and still is.

Anyway after even reinstalling the OS on my notebook... Finally I borrowed some Xtra account details to find that I could use reasonable speed dail up on my Apple and Windows machine.

I'm moving in 4 months so broadband is not an option... dial up meets my current needs at home... or it should.

There seems to be massive latency in recieving data packets. Sometimes they just seem to get lost... a page just never completely loads.
I'm not talking demanding sites here: Google News, Orcons own webmail, stuff etc.
I did some speed tests a few nights ago... far from 56kbps.
I was getting between .89 to 3 KBps at www.radiomods.co.nz

I've submitted a ticket and emailed a couple of addresses.
Are ISPs trying to squeeze users into broadband?
Why would I get 5 months of crap service?
5 months of thinking what is wrong with my machine...
How dumb was that?
Any clues?

I guess it has been discussed here... but the new broadband rates from Xtra... A joke.
Too much for too little. People who sign up for the 200MB plan are going to get burned... why not just hand Telecom a blank cheque.
I'd hope for something better. I think it just got worse.
Cheers

448779 2006-04-23 11:42:00 Take it to someone else's house use their line to see the result, if it is not your lines then use someone else's dial up connection that is known to be good and see if it is ok. If it is not then your computer has a problem.

Start from there.

As I said above... I tried another user's Xtra dialup settings and it worked fine.
And I am talking about using two different computers here (an Apple and Windows) both showing the same painful crawl speed.
I will however check out my orcon dial up somewhere else... didn't think of that just to confirm.

448781 2006-04-23 12:34:00 Sorry didn't grok that, then either your line or your Orcon dial up is faulty. Try someone else's ISP on your line or as you intend above, both to be sure. zqwerty (97)
448782 2006-04-23 20:46:00 It could also be something to do with your specific account... have you tried calling your ISP? The_End_Of_Reality (334)

Yes, XTRA's starter plan is total c**p! If anyone is stupid enough to sign up with Xtra without shopping around comparing other ISPs, I guess they deserve what they get.

Sure hope some program like Fair Go, or Consumers on the radio warn people that Xtra's plans are not the fantastic deal their advertising makes it out to be.

448784 2006-04-23 21:39:00 Orcon's Dialup here in Tauranga is also hopeless most night's and weekend's with last night being frustrating.

Daytime midweek is alright leading to assume someone's got the tap nearly turned off.

You would think Orcon would be a little bit more forthcoming about the problem than appear's on there status page.

448785 2006-04-23 22:29:00 I had the same problem with ihug a few years back. Changed ISP and problems all solved, despite ihug denying it had anything to do with them. wotz (335)
448786 2006-04-24 02:39:00 Xtra's dialup maybe costly........and pointless..........but it never dies out........I have never had problems........that's why i'm still on it :D! zahmad (8963)

Wow... snap. I'm in Tauranga also. I did give some thought to asking my brother in Napier to test my account from his location. Just might do that.
I did mean to test the account from someone elses landline today (Tauranga) - but didn't get time.

It is like taking forever to bring up Orcons help page as I type this.

I'm not sure that saying people who get burned on Xtra start up accounts... get what they deserve - is really a fair call.
Your average Joe doesn't understand much in regards to IT... they just use it and want it to work.
What is 200MBs to them and are they even aware that the traffic is measured both ways... so maybe always on is not best for small accounts.
Maybe 200 is fine for email and the odd web page... but why bother... and the risk to being screwed over by a trogan, virus or whatever is just insane.

Should Xtra monitor the type of network activity from our computers and warn us if something dodgy is going on?
Hmmm

I just think that Telecom/Xtra - by offering such a mental start up plan are doing a massive diservice or just herding customers towards their more expensive dressed up as improved plans.
Grrr
Never had much problems with Xtra dialup in the past... just their prices of late... which I see have come down.
